Coming on the heels of the highly-rated 1998 vintage are the 2000s from the Southern Rhne.  We're hearing a drum beating for these wines, though these may be drowned out by those drums from Bordeaux.

The Rhne is a large region, divided into the Northern region, famed for Cte -Rtie and Hermitage (Syrah-based reds) while the Southern area is comprised of appellations such as Chteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, etc., which are based, usually, on Grenache.

A cold snap in March was followed by a cool Spring.  The summer was warm, with August being extremely hot in the South.  The grapes tended to have "tough" skins.

How does this effect the resulting wines?  More color?  More tannin?  More extract?

Here's what we found:

The wines, as a group, were very good.  There is a range of stylistic differences, but qualitatively, this was a nice bunch of wines.  Fifth place through last place are separated by a mere 6 points, so one person's ranking could significantly alter the rankings.  All but two of the 8 wines had a first place vote.  All but one wine had a last place vote.

8th Place: GALETS DE PAPES "Vieilles Vignes" CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
One taster described this wine as having "ripe fruit, a bit sharp and it's light, thin and simple."  Another person felt it "has a bitterness on the entry but it improved with aeration."  Bob felt it has a character akin to "rock candy or Jujube's, but I ended up sort of liking it.  The wine has tasty tannins."  Someone else said "It's just not spicy enough, but it got better with time."  Another critic found it had "an off-putting bitterness, with an earthy nose, light fruit and subtle spice notes."
I really enjoyed this, although I would have preferred a bit more spice.  The wine is intensely berryish with lots of strawberry and raspberry aromas.  The same intensity of fruit shines on the palate, with ripe fruit countered by moderate tannins. I found this more lush in texture and was not bothered by the tannin level here which seemed to offend some tasters.  One-and-a-half to two stars (on my three star scale, no stars being standard and 3 stars being outstanding).




7th Place:  VIEUX TLGRAPHE CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
Here's a "quite typical Southern Rhne, with intense Grenache aromas, berries and cola notes, but it's borderline jammy and the Grenache is too domineering and simple." said one critic.  Another taster found "Light cherry and strawberry fruit but no structure, balance or depth."  A third person declared "It's over-ripe."  Another taster felt it had "nice balance."  Someone else found it "floral, fruity and exciting on the nose, but strong and alcoholic on the palate."
I liked the ripe raspberry aromas of the Grenache and it shows a hint of spice, but finally the jammy character became too boring and dull.  I found it big, ripe and a bit hot on the palate with plenty of tannin, but I'm not fond of so much stewed or cooked fruit.  Perhaps a half star rating is fair?






6th Place:  LA CRAU DE MA MRE CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
One taster felt this wine had "traditional Rhne spice with green pepper notes."  Another person found some "pomegranate, minerally and dirt-like notes...you could actually taste the soil of the hill the vines are growing on!  But it's hot, though."  Someone found a bit of "SO2 on the nose that blew off to show nice, young fruit.  I liked it, despite its bitterness early on."  Another person pegged this as less-than-noble, regarding it as "more of a Ctes-du-Rhne than a Chteauneuf-du-Pape."
I initially liked the youthful fruity character and exuberance of the nose but found it became more green and vegetal, showing a sort of stalky or stemmy character.  The wine is very flavorful with some woodsy, spicy notes on the palate and it's far more expressive than I'd have guessed based on the nose.  One star.






5th Place:  GALETS DES PAPES "Tradition" CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
The first vocalist said "I liked the nose with the green pepper and mushroom character, but it's thin and has a sour apple quality and an uninteresting flavor."  Someone else felt this was a "good, everyday quaffer.  It's enjoyable."  Another taster "liked the brambly nose with nice fruit and pepper but it's too tannic and this covers the fruit on the palate."  Someone characterized the nose as "Exciting, with some nutty flavors."  A final commentator said "it's spicy with berries and plums, but it's not as concentrated as some other wines."
I enjoyed the fine integration of berry aromas and spice notes on the nose.  The wine displays the same elements on the palate, with mildly spicy tones and some mild tannins.  One star.



4th Place:  BOSQUET DES PAPES "Vieille Vignes" CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
"This wine has barely any nose at all, but it's more complex on the palate and has a nice finish.  It just tasted good to me!" said one panel member.  Someone felt it is "gamey and earthy on the nose with a little barnyard note, but nice on the palate with a touch of oak, earth and spice that all make this an intriguing wine."  Another critic found "good berry fruit and some sour cherry notes on the nose with pepper on the palate and good length.  Plus, it's approachable now."  Someone else said it's "got cherry and strawberry fruit with some sweet herbs, a hint of mint and cinnamon."  A final word from one lady was that "it smells better than it tastes."
I found this to be nearly as jammy as the Vieux Telegraphe, but with less cooked fruit.  It's got a bit more spice on the palate and some spice and pepper with a hint of cloves in the mouth.  One star.


3rd Place:  LES VINS DE VIENNE  "Les Otlis" CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
"This is really ripe with sweet, dark fruits and it's drinkable now.  A big YUM!!" said one critic.  Another taster found "Good, dark currant fruit with some pepper...medium to heavy tannins...the most full wine of the set."  One lady found "Ocean Spray cranberry fruit on the nose, but then it didn't have much of a finish."  Bob piped up, asking "Didn't anyone find this to be really oaky and quite an internationally-styled wine?"  One fellow responded, "It is, but I like the style and balance with a lovely pepper spice."
I was pleased with the sweet oak bouquet on my first 'pass' through sniffing the wines, but then I decided I couldn't really determine WHAT kind of wine this is or WHERE it is from because the oak is so intense.  There's a hint of anise on the nose, however.  There are plenty of flavors from the barrels here, the wine being oaky and woodsy with sweet vanilla spices and cedar.  It's a showy red wine, very well made, but if you tell me this is a Cabernet, lavishly-oaked Zinfandel or Barbera I might believe it.  Nonetheless: one-and-a-half stars.



2nd Place:  CUVE DE VATICAN "Rserve Sixtine" CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
"This is tight as a drum, but it ought to be awesome in about 5 years!" said one critic.  Another person felt it was "closed on the nose with light, floral undertones.  Nice raspberry and riper cherry fruit with a good integration of tannins.  It kept improving in the glass."  A third person found "great structure, balance and black cherry fruit.  It might be a bit one-dimensional, but it's enjoyable!"  A fourth critic detected "mainly jammy Grenache with some smoky notes, green tannins and it's kind of grippy on the palate.  An also-ran..."
This showed, for me, really nice raspberry fruit without the excessively ripe or jammy character some wines have.  There's a bit of heat on the palate, but still plenty of fruit and a nice berry flavor with some tannins.  Very big.  One-and-a-half to two stars.



1st PLACE:  BOSQUET DES PAPES CHTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE
"Textbook Chteauneuf-du-Pape!" said one taster, with another agreeing, calling it a "classic!"   One person described this as "Pinot Noir-like with a cherry edge, some earthy notes and a metallic and leathery quality.  Lots of intensity...exceptional structure."  One critic boiled it down to "It was good!"  Someone else said it's "got a nice oak-to-fruit balance, but a dirt floor sort of flavor and I don't know how it will age."  Another critic said "It's got a nice balance between the nutty/oaky/fruit notes."  Someone felt it "lacked a core of fruit."
I thought the wine has some nice, pleasantly berryish aromas with lots of red fruit notes.  It struck me as a bit simple at first.  I noted it seemed a bit 'flat' tasting at one point but then, upon re-tasting, it seemed decidedly more spicy and 'typical' of the appellation.  This moved it up on my score sheet.  One-and-a-half stars.
