A Blind-Tasting

Continuing our series of tastings of 2001 Bordeaux wines, we opened up a set
of Margaux which were rather affordable compared to the triple-digit prices of
previous tastings.
The Margaux appellation covers some 5 communes or villages: Soussans, Margaux, Arsac, Cantenac and Labarde.
Cabernet Sauvignon, of course, dominates this country-side. The soil is
often gravelly, with limestone and clay. But Merlot is often cultivated to
a greater degree than in other Medoc wine areas. The wines of Margaux are
typically a bit more delicate as a result.
This tasting saw a handful of new tasters participating. A few of the
"newbies" did not recognize the flawed bottle of Chteau Giscours as
being "corked." This made for an interesting result, although
the Giscours did finish in last place.
Two wines were in a virtual tie for first place. The tie is broken by the
greater number of first place votes.

8th Place: CHTEAU
GISCOURS
Corked!
Most tasters recognized the musty, wet cellar
fragrance of this sample as merely a "corked" bottle, the wine having
been tainted by a faulty cork.
Some tasters identified this curious fragrance as being a "positive"
in the wine and 5 people did not rank it last!

7th Place: CHTEAU
D'ISSAN
One
person found the D'Issan to be a "meager wine with some dried flower notes
and raspberry fruit with a touch of smoke, mineral and vanilla with an
herbaceous note and oaky finish." A second critic found a
"metallic quality which I disliked." A third taster called this
"riper and jammier than the others." Another person used the
word "cooked," while a fifth critic found "licorice notes but
this is poor." Another person said "It displays cassis to a
fault," causing someone else to ask "The San Andreas,
perhaps?" A final taster said it shows "real personality, but I
didn't like it!"
I detected a fair bit of red fruit fragrances, such as berries. It's a
juicy, little aroma with just a touch of an earthy quality. The flavors
display some mild red fruit notes and a touch of tannin. It's not a
particularly developed or compelling wine at this stage, but I'd guess it'll be
a nice bottle in 5-10 years. I gave it a one star rating on my three star
scale, no stars being a standard quality wine.

6th Place: CHTEAU
LASCOMBES
One
person characterized this as a "Robert Parker wine since it's a bit ripe
and raisiny."
Mr.
Parker, in fact, awarded this a 92 point score, writing "...dense
ruby/purple color is accompanied by ripe aromas of spring flowers, blueberries,
blackberries and cassis. Medium-bodied, stylish and elegant, with sweet
tannin, impressive concentration, tremendous persistence as well as flavor
intensity, and a 40+ second finish, this noble claret should be at its finest
between 2005-2016."
Someone else encountered notes of kaffir lime leaves,
with vanillin oak and a metallic quality. It's rather low in acidity, but
fairly tannic." The "low acid/high tannin" sentiment was
echoed by another taster, while someone else found "grapefruit rind or pith
bitterness." Another taster noted elements of "tobacco and cigar
box with a bitter finish." A final set of descriptors included the
words "ripe, licorice, earthy, currants, tobacco and cherries."
I detected a jammy quality in this wine, finding really ripe fruit along with
some mint and a woodsy or pencil shavings tone on the nose. There is
plenty of tannin here and maybe enough fruit to warrant it. I gave it a
one-and-a-half star rating finding it to need 8-15 years of cellaring.
One-and-a-half stars.

5th Place: CHTEAU
PRIEUR-LICHINE
"This
wine offers fresh, fruity notes with a floral tone and toasted barrel
elements. It's dusty and shows some ripe plum fruit. Nice oak on the
finish." said one critic. A second taster found "dark berry
fruit up front and integrated fruit and tannin. It's got a long finish and
is elegant. It's one of the most complex wines of the tasting."
Less enthusiastic were the words of one person who found "tart and unripe
notes yet it's showing a bit of grape and cherry fruit...too tannic."
Another person felt this needed "more fruit to go with this level of
tannin." Another critic detected some "sharp, volatile acidity
on the nose."
I found a mildly floral quality to start, but on the second pass through this
set, I, too, found a note of volatile acidity. I can't say I was
especially attracted to this, since the nose was a bit flawed. It's got a
moderate tannin level and, in my view, not enough other things to warrant the
gamble of cellaring this.

4th Place: PAVILLON ROUGE du CHTEAU
MARGAUX
One
taster waxed rhapsodic, noting "sweet, cedary oak to this complex wine that
is very much a typical Margaux. I wonder if it isn't the Pavillon
Rouge." A second person felt it was "a pretty wine with floral
notes, some herbal tones, chocolate and perfumy currants with a talcum-like
finish." A third taster mentioned its "nice balance as it's not
over-the-top, but a bit simple." Another person noted "mint and
eucalyptus," while someone else mentioned "green fruit." A
final taster guessed this to have a substantial amount of Merlot as
"there's a note of green peppers here."
Having really enjoyed the stellar 1999 Pavillon Rouge, I was disappointed by
this vintage. It's a good quality wine to my taste, with a mildly herbal
element and a touch of mint. Perhaps a decade in the bottle will allow
this to blossom and deepen a bit? I gave it a one to one-and-a-half star
rating.

3rd Place: CHTEAU
RAUZAN SEGLA
"Here's
a wine with ripe, plummy, cherry cream fruit notes, a hint of butterscotch and
black tea." said one critic. Another person felt it was a bit coarse,
saying "It's a bit drying on the palate. Needs more
fruit." Someone else found it to be "fresh and floral, with
chocolaty notes, a bit of smoky berry fruit, perfumy currants and some rose
petal tones." Bob mentioned it having " Sweet brown spice
notes and a Margaux-like feel." A final critic said it has an
"oaky finish."
I found it to be a typical Bordeaux, with some berry notes to its rather simple
nose. Mildly tannic on the palate, this is a standard wine today, but
should blossom into a rather good "old" wine if cellared for a
decade. One star.

2nd Place (tied for first) CHTEAU
MALESCOT SAINT-EXUPERY
Here's
a wine with "sweet oak, toasty elements and plenty of ripe fruit."
said one critic, adding "There's a nice black raspberry quality here and
loganberry with a silky texture." Another taster found "earthy
plum fruit with some spice notes, coffee and herbs and smoky vanilla. It's
got a very long finish." Naturally, another person felt it had a
short finish! Someone else found elements of "bacon and leather
on the finish." Another taster said it "smelled great but didn't
wear well on the palate, lacking fruit."
The nose was really a charmer here. Lots of dark fruit fragrances and
plenty of cedar notes made this toasty wine a delight. I found it charming
on the palate, too, with some woodsy tones and red fruits. It promised a
tad more than it delivered. One-and-a-half stars.

1st Place: CHTEAU
DU TERTRE
Winning
the tasting by a lone first place vote, one fan characterized it as having
"big fruit and good intensity." Someone else encountered
"Tart blackberries, a bit of rhubarb and a smoky note...the finish has some
minerals and sage." One person "preferred this to have a bit
less oak." Another taster found it "consistent and complex,
being one of the bigger wines of the tasting and with good
structure." One critic detected some "SO2
and mushrooms with a pungently-scented note of herbal fruit. Overall,
though, it's a nice wine."
I encountered some red fruit fragrances to start, finally finding a bit of a
leathery note on the nose. Dark fruits...It's pretty big and intense on
the palate. Not a backwards wine, but not precocious, either. It
probably needs 8-15 years. One-and-a-half stars+.
