2002 Napa CABERNETS
A Blind-Tasting Comparison
March 15, 2006

Notes by
Gerald Weisl,
wine merchant

We've had several tastings of 2002 California Cabernets to date and we're finding it to be a most uneven vintage.

The summer was relatively cool and there were some heat spikes in September and October.  Many vintners reported the sugar content of the fruit reached substantial levels before the grapes were physiologically mature.

We need to remember, too, that this vintage followed on the heels of the 9-11 disaster and the market for wine was depressed.  Wineries were filled with unsold wines and sales were slowed by various economic factors.

Now these wines are coming to market when many sectors of the economy are showing signs of life.  Many wines are hitting the market at dizzying prices.

The general perspective of the tasting participants was that these wines are rather expensive.  The group's top wine, according to most tasters we queried, was valued at about $30-$40, far short of the $67 asking price.

Ellen was away when this tasting was conducted.

8th Place: CHARLES KRUG 2002 Napa "Limited Release" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
The winery web site claims Krug made only 96 cases of this wine and they sell it for $70 at the winery.  Interestingly (or maybe not), the wholesaler is asking about $63 for this puppy, meaning at normal retail markups, this would sell for between $80 and $95 a bottle.  The Krug winery used to make some lovely Cabernets many, many years ago.  It's remarkable that they can't seem to figure out what direction to take.
One taster said "This wine has a tanky edge which is why it 'tanked' in this tasting."  Another critic said "This can't be as old as it tastes."  Someone else encountered notes of "pungent medicinal tones and a band-aid-like quality."  One taster found "Definite, dark toasted oak and a funky quality, with a little bit of green pepper and a touch of dill.  It reminds me of a Colgin-styled wine and as it opened, displays some Brettanomyces."  A final critic noted "If it wasn't so musty, I'd have hated it anyway.  Maybe they had the wine on the skins too long?"
I didn't find it "musty" in the manner of a corked bottle, for example.  However, I did note the wine has a "funky" quality to its aroma, with leathery tones and a dusty note.  It seemed earthy and a bit 'dirty' most of the way through the tasting and finally had an odd, burnt quality to the nose.  It's a rough & tumble, "cowboy" Cabernet on the palate.  I felt the wine was "big" in one sense and yet shallow in another.  It's aggressively tannic wine, but I didn't perceive much of a "middle" to it.  Sorry.  I'm not thrilled, either, by the price of admission for a bottle of this.  No stars on my three star scale, meaning this is, at best, an average or ordinary bottle of wine.

7th Place:  DOMINUS 2002 Napa
The first critic to voice an opinion said "This is another syrupy monster!  It's more over-extracted California Cabernet."  Someone else encountered "Yeasty notes on the nose and a hint of black licorice.  There's even a note reminding me of a Chocolate ale or stout.  Very fat, with a grainy astringency and it's terribly bitter on the finish."  A more positive note was sounded by a fan who said "This has richness, mouthfeel and is full,-bodied.  I found sweet tannins and ripe fruit with dark, bitter chocolate notes to the flavor."
This, to me, showed a medium intensity berry-like fruit note.  I encountered some red and black fruits.  My assessment was that it's "good," rather than "grand."  The wine offers nice red fruit flavors with medium-intensity tannins.  It seems to strive to be a big, deep, more 'important' wine but I found it lacking depth for the amount of 'power' I encountered.  Perhaps time in the bottle will allow this to fill out and blossom?  At the asking price, I would sure hope so.  It's certainly a bit of a gamble.

6th Place:  DAVIES & GAMBLE "ORIGIN" 2002 Napa "Family Home" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"Here's a wine with ripe fruit, Santa Rosa plums, cassis, and black cherry notes.  I found it very well-balanced." said the first critic.  "I like it," said a second, adding "it's well-integrated, with dark cherry, black cherry, mocha and espresso on the finish."  A third taster mentioned "plummy notes and red fruits, but it's thin on the mid-palate."  Another person found it "very complex, but bitter and sharp."  Someone else termed it "stern and difficult.  It doesn't have much charm, frankly."  A final voice said it was "moderately extracted, but it's hollow and short."
On the first pass through all I found was a major woody character, reminding me of the impact one gets when inhaling (too intensely) a Cognac or Armagnac.  The wine seemed to have extracted "more wood than you can shake a stick at." (You may not steal that line...I've been using it for years...)  The wine is a big, tannic, young Cabernet with more fruit than oak on the palate.  This may turn into a nice bottle of wine someday, but at this stage, I found it very disjointed, what with the oaky nose, aggressive tannins and no sense of balance presently. Time will tell, so this is a question-mark-of-a-wine.

5th Place:  J. DAVIES 2002 Napa "Diamond Mountain District" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
The first person to critique this wine found it "Light, light and light.  And it has sour tannins."  Someone else said "It's too acidic and medium-bodied, with more oak than fruit.  The finish is so-so."  Another person was more positive, saying "I liked it at first as it shows a touch of a green herbal quality, but then it became more earthy and mushroomy.  I did not feel this improved over the course of the tasting."  One panel member encountered "raspberry and vanilla notes."  A final voice said "I preferred the aromas, but found it hollow on the palate."
There were mildly plummy notes on the nose on the first pass, with berryish tones and a hint of cassis.  This wine is a medium-bodied, somewhat 'shy' Cabernet.  It is not the huge, in-your-face, make-a-statement style of Cabernet.  Instead, it's nicely balanced, mild-mannered with light tannins and nice fruit on the palate.  I felt this has 3-10 years of aging potential and I gave it a one star rating.

4th Place:  CONN CREEK 2002 Rutherford "Hohzoni Vineyard" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Only a few tasters voiced an opinion of this wine.  One postulated "The oak tannins add to the already over-extracted tannic nature of this wine.  It's hot and short."  Another critic found "a fair amount of oak and only oak.  Not a great Cabernet."  A final taster felt this was "Sort of a tar-like Cabernet."
I enjoyed the aromatics to start with, finding lots of cassis and some mild coffee and cocoa notes.  A hint of tobacco leaf added to the intrigue on the nose.  The wine fell down a bit on the palate, being moderately tannic and rather mouth-drying.  It has a bit of oak to its flavor, but falls short of being compelling.  I pegged this as a one star wine.

3rd Place:  SBRAGIA 2002 Howell Mountain "Rancho del Oso" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
The 2001 of this was exceptionally good, so we were a bit sad to see the follow-up vintage didn't match it in quality.  One taster remarked "If you like cod liver oil, you'll like this wine."  A second critic felt "this had good red fruit up front, but harsh oak dominates the wine.  It's got coffee notes, an oaky quality and a vanillin finish, but it lacks depth."  Someone else termed it "Dusty, with cassis fruit, notes of Kefir lime and tart, ripe flavors with notes of white pepper and oak.  Bitter, too."  A final voice intoned "The fruit is light and simple.  It's medium-light bodied and too acidic.  There's a touch of vanilla and molasses on the nose, but it's got a short finish."
I initially marked down this wine as I did not find the nose to express much in the realm of Cabernet.  It reminded me more of a well-polished Pinot Noir as this displayed sweet cherry fruit and a mildly smoky, woodsy oak character.  The cherries dominate the palate and the wine offers nice oak, sweet vanillin notes and a nice woodsy finish.  In our previous tasting someone blurted out "This Pinot is my favorite Cabernet of the tasting."  Well, this Cabernet is my favorite Pinot of this tasting!  I gave it a star just for being a pretty wine, even if I didn't find it a particularly typical Cabernet.  It has more charm and polish than most of the wines in this set.

2nd Place:  CONN CREEK 2002 Oakville "Collins Vineyard" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"I found dark, minty, tobacco and leather notes in this well-balanced Cabernet.  There are sweeter tannins here, with nice glycerine and mineral notes and a tobacco-like finish." said one tasting participant.  Another found "green herbal notes with eucalyptus overtones.  Great dark fruit, it's medium-full bodied with nice balance between the fruit, oak and tannins.  Red fruits, black fruits and an earthy, mushroomy note."  More critical, one taster felt this was "dominated by oak and it's a bit short," while someone else knocked it for being "too bitter."
Berries and deep, dark fruit were present on the nose in my glass.  There are some pleasantly woodsy tones, too.  There's nice dark fruit and red berries on the palate, with mild oak.  It's a fairly complete Cabernet and I switched this into first place at the last moment.  One-and-a-half stars +.

1st Place: COSENTINO 2002 Oakville "Hoopes Ranch" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
One critic dubbed this "elegant," while Bob Gorman felt this was a great example of "canny winemaking.  The guy didn't push the wine.  It's classy, beautiful Napa Cabernet.  This is an object lesson in winemaking!"  Someone else felt this was "nicely accessible," while a final critic found it "extremely astringent and drying in the mouth.  There are fine, grainy, bitter tannins here."
I had this ranked first all the way through the tasting and then, at the last minute, dropped it down.  Going back after the tasting I felt I should have left it in first place...it's an expressive Cabernet Sauvignon.  I liked the nice, woodsy, cedar and vanillin tones on the nose.  On the palate the wine is big, deep, dark, earthy and woodsy.  It may not be polished or terribly elegant, but it is easy to identify as a Cabernet.  Mild leafy notes here, too.  One to one-and-a-half stars.

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.

WE HAVE NOT ORGANIZED A TASTING IN A WHILE...
BUT WE DO POST THE RESULTS OF A PRIVATE TASTING GROUP THAT'S BEEN MEETING FOR MORE THAN 47 YEARS!

We are working on organizing some blind-tastings at the shop.
Send us a note to indicate your interest in participating.
These would be on Wednesday evenings and you'd need to bring 8 wine glasses.
