2002 NAPA CABERNETS
A Blind-Tasting Comparison
October 19, 2005

Notes by
Gerald Weisl,
wine merchant

The 2002 Cabernets have been coming on to the market and, as you might expect, there's the usual "beating of the drums" to encourage consumers to part with $30 to $200 for a bottle of these precious nectars.

The vintage offers several interesting dynamics.  Wineries had been burned by the bad press for their 1998s and some were now struggling to sell their maligned 2000s.  The economy at harvest time was in a state of flux due to the effects of the Post 9-11 malaise.

The growing season began with good Spring conditions and no problems from frosts.  As the vines were in bloom there was some cool weather and this did reduce the crop a bit.  The summer was rather mild and many winemakers felt their sugar levels had developed ahead of flavor.  As a result, many growers waited to pick when the flavor levels were more acceptable.  A bit of heat in September saw many vineyards dehydrate and so there were likely to be some rather potent wines produced.

From the economic stand-point--many wineries would only accept as much fruit as they had committed to buying.  There was not much of a mad scramble for winemakers to buy grapes for a thirsty and demanding market.  The "spot" market for fruit saw reduced prices for fruit compared to previous vintages.  We read reports of grape prices being renegotiated...down.

We assembled a set of wines featuring Cabernets from two producers whose wines had won tastings with the previous vintage.  We had some larger Napa producers represented and some smaller estates.  The prices ranged from around $30 to $65.  This is, sad to report, regarded by many Napa vintners as "entry level" pricing for Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

One wine was moderately ahead of the pack and would have been even more significantly ahead had I not been the lone dissenting voice, rating it last!  Two other wines were a bit behind the leader and two wines were well off the 'pace.'

Here's what we found:

8th Place: TURNBULL 2002 Napa  Estate Grown CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Most tasters faulted this wine for having noticeable amounts of residual sugar.  One critic said "It's too sweet for dinner and not sweet enough for dessert."  Obviously, they picked some fruit at very elevated levels of sugar.  One taster likened this to "toasted marshmallow and it's low in acidity and doesn't seem to have much structure for cellaring."  Someone else knocked the Turnbull for having a "vanishing core of fruit.  The residual sugar in the wine buffers some rather bitter tannins."  Another taster described the wine as being redolent of "strawberries."
I contacted the winery to ask how much residual sugar they have in the wine and a prompt response arrived proclaiming the sugar level to be a mere .15%.  We tested the wine and one taster with a sharp palate predicted the wine would have closer to 1% of sugar.  The test measured to about .75% (or about 7 to 8 grams per liter of sugar).  In perusing the winery web site, they seem to have garnered good reviews from Connoisseur's Guide (92 points) and The Wine Spectator (91 points).  Many critical publications are, perhaps, less sensitive to sweetness than was our panel of tasters.
I found the wine to show mild red fruit aromas.  There was something "old fashioned" on the nose here, as I thought about old Louis Martini Cabernet I'd tasted in their youth a few decades ago!  I noted the wine was off-dry on the palate.  It's sweet in flavor and also somewhat 'fat'.  The mild tannins don't quite balance the sugar.  It might actually "work" well on the dinner table if you're pairing it with something that has a 'sweet point' to it such as a soy-ginger-garlic marinated lamb, for example.  I gave this no stars, faulting it for the sugar.

7th Place:  LADERA 2002 "Howell Mountain" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
This wine had a number of detractors.  Many tasters mentioned 'sour' or 'shrill' tones to this bruiser of a wine.  "It's sour with licorice, cassis, chocolate and tobacco notes.  But it's so tannic and bitter that it comes across as sour." said one critic.  Another found "Big fruit with raspberry and blueberry fruit notes but it's bitter thanks to some rather green tannins on the finish.  Does this have some odd notes, like volatile acidity, or what?"   One taster likened this to a fierce Zinfandel.  Someone else described it as being "Port like."  Another critic found notes of "pomegranate."
I can understand those notes mentioning 'off' or 'odd' tones to this wine.  I found a whiff of a high-toned fragrance which I thought might be volatile.  I finally described it as showing notes of mint and herbs on the nose with a mildly woodsy bouquet.  It's a deep Cabernet on the palate and big.  There's a bit of bite from the combination of tannin and alcohol...another wine picked at high sugars.  I gave it a one star rating on my three star scale, no stars being ordinary to standard wine.

6th Place:  OAKVILLE RANCH 2002 Estate CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"This is a big, sweet, soft Cabernet that lacks definition." said one critic.  Another found it "lacks structure.  It has some cassis-like fruit but was falling apart in the glass."  Someone else characterized this as "More Merlot-like than Cabernet.  It's dull and soft."  Another taster found notes of "pickle barrel, coconut and it's one dimensional.  The fruit seems 'cooked,' too."
I found brown spice notes on the nose of this wine along with some red fruit aromas.  It struck me a dry and a bit low in acidity.  On the palate this is a softer-styled wine...moderate tannins probably and low acidity suggest short-term aging here.  It's good but not grand.  One star.

5th Place:  ROBERT PECOTA 2002 "Kara's Vineyard" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"I found black pepper notes with currant-like fruit and a bit of a forest floor element." said the first critic.  Another person noted "A light nose with grapefruit and sour cherry on the mid-palate."  One person felt "this opened up during the tasting.  The finish is very long."  Someone else said they thought the wine tasted better at the end of the evening than it did when first poured.  One person knocked this down for having what they felt was a bit of "SO2 or mercaptan on the nose to start.  It's bitter, tannic and aggressive on the palate."  Someone else detected notes of "lemon pith on the finish."
Ellen was a big fan of this wine.  She found it to be head and shoulders ahead of the pack.
I found the toasty, woodsy notes which reminded someone of 'forest floor.'  There's lots of dark fruit elements on the nose and palate.  It struck me as styled along the lines of many Bordeaux wines more than typical Napa Cabernet.  I liked the notes of licorice and dark fruit.  I gave it a one-and-a-half star rating.

4th Place:  BEAULIEU VINEYARDS 2002 Napa "TAPESTRY"
One taster confidently pegged this wine as coming from "Howell Mountain.  It's big, heavy, with menthol and Indian spice notes and firm tannins.  This is quite reminiscent of Dunn's Howell Mountain wines.  It has a fair amount of oak and is a flashy, big wine."  Bob Gorman found it "Nicely concentrated though it's unknit and unready.  This ought to have a nice future showing dusty Cabernet notes."  Another critic found it "focused but think with some nice features."  Someone else likened this to "cherry cough syrup with a note of roasted corn and some olive-like aromas."
I found this to be a shade darker in color than the rest of the field.  It offers some earthy fragrances with woodsy notes and nice, dark fruit aromas.  The American oak here was prominent.  Like other wines in this tasting, there's a hot element on the palate.  I described this wine as potent and found the alcohol to 'burn' a bit in the mouth.  It's perhaps worth a one star rating.

3rd Place: MOUNT VEEDER 2002 Napa CABERNET SAUVIGNON
One panel member described the Mount Veeder Cabernet as being "really exotic.  There are leathery notes, charred tones, star anise, cassis, chili along with a grainy astringency."  One taster questioned whether this was made from "over ripe grapes."  Someone else used the adjectives "Charred oak, minerals and gravelly tones."  Another taster "had this in first place early on but it fell apart to some degree.  I felt it became more elegant, actually."  Someone else declared this "the lowest in acidity and the highest in alcohol."  A final voice mentioned "earthy and cherry notes."
I found a wonderful fragrance of blackberry fruit to start and this kept blossoming for me.  Only one other taster ranked this as highly as did I, though.  It showed notes of cedar and a touch of eucalyptus on the nose...very exotic, to be sure.  I liked the balance of fruit and oak here and found the tannin to be well-integrated with the fruit.  Two stars!!

2nd Place:   JOSEPH PHELPS 2002 Napa CABERNET SAUVIGNON
One critic found this wine "tightened up during the tasting.  It displays nice fruit and tannin...sort of Bordeaux-like."  Another person noted "This came way up during the tasting.  It was disjointed to start, having lighter fruit, but it's nice."  Another person described it as "Briary and herbaceous with full, plush textures.  It's ripe.  Terrific."   One taster said they had it "tied for first place.  It's a bit herbaceous, though one of the best balanced wines of the tasting.  Well done!"  Someone mentioned it "has a complete mouthfeel with a slightly bitter edge that gives it a palate-cleansing character."
I found this to show lots of dark berry fruit notes.  The Cabernet is far more the centerpiece here than oak.  Good Cabernet flavors, with plum-like fruit and some berry tones.  I gave it a one star rating.

1st Place:  DOWNING FAMILY 2002 Napa CABERNET SAUVIGNON
One critic announced "This is one of the oakiest wines of the tasting, but it's a substantial wine that's well-balanced with good varietal character."  Another person found "Nice red fruit notes such as red currants and medium tannins.  Nicely balanced with a fair amount of oak."  Someone else said it's "very ripe and needs time."  Another taster found "cherry cordial tones, ripe cherry fruit and a tart cherry flavor."  A final person tabbed it as "Syrah like."
I found the nose to be a bit closed in...it was nice as far as it goes, but I didn't find it as exciting as the rest of the field from an aromatics standpoint.  I didn't find this to have a point of balance or finesse on the palate.  It hit me as a coarse, tannic, alcoholic, hot wine.  Rough and tumble on the palate, this simply lacked a note of charm for me.  Obviously, others found much more to like here.

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.

WE HAVE NOT ORGANIZED A TASTING IN A WHILE...
