2003 NAPA CABERNET SAUVIGNON
A Blind-Tasting Comparison
July 20, 2006

Notes by
Gerald Weisl
wine merchant

The Napa Valley Vintner's association issued a press release in November of 2003 trumpeting the virtues of the just-finished "vintage."  Its headline reads:
Many Believe It Could Be One of the Decade's Best

They surveyed a number of winemakers to assess the quality of the vintage.  Virtually everyone queried suggests the vintage is a good one with superlatives such as "great" and "exceptional" being bandied about.

The winter was an extended one and April was exceptionally wet, stalling the start of the growing season.  The summer saw a few heat spikes over the summer and a moderate period of high temps in September.  Many vintners said the harvest season was an extended one, some picking Cabernet Sauvignon over a month-and-a-half time span.

With all the glowing reports, we were interested to assess a group of Cabernets from some famous names.  A few of the wines in this tasting are not famous, but most are rather well-known.

The reaction to the wines was mixed and there was but one wine which out-paced the pack by a small margin.  Interestingly and unusually, each and every wine in the tasting had a last place vote.  Six of the eight wines had at least one first place vote.

The wine which won the tasting had half of the tasters ranking it in first place.  Second place through fourth place wines were separated by a mere two points, while fifth place through last place were just 8 points apart.

One perspective might be that these wines are all great and closely bunched together in terms of quality.  My assessment was these were a lackluster bunch of wines and I had trouble getting excited about tonight's wines.  Was it the warm weather that caused these to not show well, I wonder?  Did I set my level of expectation too high, perhaps?  Was I having an off night?

Ellen and Bob had similar reactions.  Ellen said she didn't think this tasting revealed any interesting wines and Bob said he did not think any of this set was worth having in the shop.

Here's what we found:

8th Place:  BUEHLER 2003 Napa "Estate" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
One taster encountered "Plastic or prunes?  I disliked it, whatever it is.  This is a dull and awkward wine."  Another critic found it "Dumb, low intensity on the aroma and bitter on the palate.  It's simply a difficult wine."  Other adjectives were "Sour" and "Bitter, metallic with hints of cigar box, black pepper and tangerine."
I found this to be a very simple, ordinary red wine with briary aromas and a touch of berry-like fruit.  There seemed to me to be an underlying vegetal quality, so you have ripe and a suggestion that the vines produced a heavier crop, perhaps, than they could actually bear.  The wine shows a mild berry-like flavor and it's tannic and a bit hot.  I found the wine to taste rather flat and simple. It's not anything special now and not likely to grow into a particularly elegant wine.  No stars on my three star scale...I am amused to read the winemaker's notes which I've copied below, as they sound great, but don't describe the wine in my glass.
Winemaker Notes:  The aromas hint at black fruit: ripe black cherries and black plums.  Enticing barrel qualities of cola and spice complement the fruit aromas.  On the palate, the wine shows layers of deeply extracted flavors that only mature hillside vineyards can give."

7th Place:  TURNBULL 2003 Napa "Estate Grown" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
One taster characterized this wine as "Earthy!"  Another mentioned finding "Nice, herbal Cabernet fruit and a hint of oak.  It's nicely varietal and dry, firm and has good Cabernet character.  Intense and complete."  Someone else found the Turnbull wine to be "Lush and fruit-forward."  Another person described this as "syrupy."  One panel member told us "This wine is fat and flabby with drying tannins and it's a fruit bomb."  Bob Gorman, an old-timer, said "This is an old-fashioned Napa Cabernet and it's not a pretty one."
I ranked this in second place, not because it was great but because it was marginally more interesting than the rest of these wines.  The aromas hinted at stalky and stemmy with some red fruit tones.  It's hardly a grand wine, but is more like "Cabernet ordinaire."  There's a bit of berry and plum on the palate, with mild tannins.  The fruit and tannin balance is okay, but the wine is simple and not very complex.  Like the rest of the wines in this tasting, it's a rather superficial wine.  Perhaps a one star wine.
Winery Description:  "The Crossword girl orders her Macchiato with steamed milk on the side, just another indication that preference is a very personal thing.  If I had stepped up to this tasting counter I would have likely asked for a Cab with cherry fruit and a bit of mocha on top, soulful tannins that are round and soft and a flavor that carries past the fruit to a place that is about the sense of well-being created by...yes, bittersweet chocolate.  I have an unfair advantage, of course, because I am my own vino-barrista.  Ain't life grand?"

6th Place:  GROTH 2003 Napa "Oakville" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"This is very earthy." said one critic.  Another found the Groth to display "Nice cedar and minty tones.  It's hollow and alcoholic, medicinal and flat on the finish."  Someone else said "I agree and yet I liked this wine, though it does have a bit of a metallic finish."  Other commentary on this wine centered on its lack of depth.  "This has a short finish," said one person, adding "It's fruit forward, but short."  Another critic encountered "Black licorice, chalky notes and some Brettanomyces and bitter almond flavors."  A final speaker suggested "This has a nice aroma but it's empty on the palate."
For me, this was showing light spice box notes on the nose with a woodsy and vegetal tone.  It veered off into the realm of being mildly earthy and a tad meaty on the nose.  I found it coarse and a bit hot on the palate, with aggressive tannins and astringency in the mouth.  On the palate, I felt this lacked fruit and was another simplistic, modest Cabernet.  No stars.
Winemaker Tasting Notes:  "...With full, rich aromas and flavors redolent of ripe stone fruit and dark berries, the 2003 Cabernet is a lush wine with a subtle tannin backbone that will allow the wine to become more complex with proper bottle age."

5th Place:  WHISPERING DOVE 2003 Napa "Stags Leap District" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
One critic felt this is a "Nice, typical Cabernet Sauvignon."  Another person found "Cassis, black olive, clove spice and fine, grainy tannins with notes of chili and bitter chocolate."  Someone else described this as "A bit shy compared to others.  It's decently structured, though."  A final critic encountered "Vanilla oak and a slightly dank nose.  It's bitter and lack 'middle.'  It's also sour and has too much tannin."
I disliked this wine for being ripe and in the direction of jammy.  It's almost more reminiscent of certain California Zinfandels.  On the palate, I found a flat wine.  It's was not merely "shy," but I felt it was hollow and empty.  This seems to be the shell of a Cabernet.  It's a standard quality, simple red wine.  No stars.

4th Place:   KARL LAWRENCE 2003 Napa CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"Dull on the nose with hints of cassis and oak in a cloying way so the wood overwhelms the fruit." said one critic.  Another found "oak and vanilla on the nose with black cherry, vanilla, mocha and bittersweet chocolate."  Someone else encountered a "great mouthfeel and it's very Cabernet-like."  Less enthusiastic was one taster who described this as "weak on the palate," while a final critic mentioned finding "excessive fruit tannins and it's really bitter."
There was a nice black currant aroma to start with a light bit of oak and some cedar tones.  There is a violet and brown spice aspect here, too.  It's decently varietal and is a tad coarse and hot.  I like the style of the wine, but it's not especially deep or profound.  One star.

3rd Place:   JOSEPH PHELPS 2003 Napa CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"This wine is full of bitter orange aromas, though it seemed to open a bit over the course of the tasting.  It finished in the middle on my ranking." said one critic.  Another taster found "Juicy currant fruit, with meaty, bacony notes, some Brettanomyces and tobacco and a bitter walnut-like streak of harshness.  Still, there is a lushness and rich texture to this wine."  A third critic found "Minty, vanilla notes on the nose and bing cherry, melted licorice and bittersweet chocolate on the palate."
Mildly berryish on the nose, for me, this had a whiff of wood underneath.  I described the aromas as "okay."  Overall, this struck me as another standard-issue Cabernet.  The flavors are of dark fruits, but like most of the other wines, it's not particularly complex or deep.  Perhaps worthy of half a star as a rating on my three star scale.

2nd Place:  PAUL HOBBS 2003 Napa CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"I found this to be a powerfully tannic red that's long and lush." said the first taster.  Another noted "Minty and tobacco notes on the nose.  This is unctuous and full, with glycerine and smoked meat flavors, cherry-like fruit and a long finish."  One critic knocked it for being "too sweet and seemingly it's over-ripe and Port-like."  Someone else "liked the nose but the flavors reminded me more of a strange plastics-like character.  It's ripe and plummy and rather Port-like."  Another person described finding an element reminiscent of "Dentyne chewing gum.  It's an easy, one-dimensional wine that's a bit unknit."
There are stalky and floral tones on the nose of this wine.  It's showing a hint of wood, but struck me an an "okay" Cabernet, but hardly a "grand vin."  The wine is aggressively tannic on the palate and has mild-intensity fruit.  It's a simple and rather superficial Cabernet.  I found some berry-like flavors.  "Ho hum" was my summation commentary.  No stars.

1st Place:  STEWART 2003 Napa CABERNET SAUVIGNON
"I liked the sweet and spicy oak notes of this wine.  It's a bit herbal and shows nice wood.  It's warm, complete and is a bit soft and ripe." said one taster.  Another critic knocked this for being "Too soft and sweet and not having any real backbone."  Someone else found the Stewart wine to be "hot and tannic and yet it's soft."  One panel member found "Pencil lead and pencil shavings notes with black raspberry, freesia, floral tones and it shows firm acidity and black currant fruit.  It's a bit ripe and jammy, though."  One person mentioned finding "Dusty, earthy tones and a lot of heat and pruney flavors."  A final critic described this as "too earthy and sweet."
There is a nice berry tone to this wine with plenty of dark fruit notes.  I liked the mild wood on the nose, too.  The flavors confirm the dark fruit character with black plum notes and some currants.  It's nicely structured and has a bit of stuffing, unlike most of these wines.  One-and-a-half stars.

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.

WE HAVE NOT ORGANIZED A TASTING IN A WHILE...
BUT WE DO POST THE RESULTS OF A PRIVATE TASTING GROUP THAT'S BEEN MEETING FOR MORE THAN 47 YEARS!

We are working on organizing some blind-tastings at the shop.
Send us a note to indicate your interest in participating.
These would be on Wednesday evenings and you'd need to bring 8 wine glasses.
