2003 SAINT EMILIONS
A Blind-Tasting Comparison
July 12, 2006

Notes by
Gerald Weisl,
wine merchant

The Bordeaux market is a remarkable study in cheerleading, rumor and economics.

Every year, wine critics race to be the first to trumpet the virtues or deflate the balloon in critiquing the newest vintage.  Some consumers, armed with the rumor of a good wine (a tasting note from some critic of a barrel sample, which may or may not be representative of what an estate will bottle in a year or so), rush to buy wines that are usually available in good quantity.

The description of every new vintage is likened to some previous years.  If you have two normal vintages, such as 2001 and 2002, when an exceptional year such as 2003 comes along, the trumpets are blown with more vigor and the drums are beaten with enthusiasm.  The problem for consumers, is, of course, all the excitement of 2003 pales in comparison now that the orchestra is playing the tune of 2005.

The problem for producers is that they seem to harvest grapes on an annual basis and they make wine every year.  (Duh!)  Critics, though, would lead readers to believe you buy Bordeaux only a few years each decade.

The 2003s had been hugely praised early on.  The wines were offered at extremely high prices.  Now that they are in bottle and appearing for sale, we assembled a set of Merlot-based wines from the St. Emilion appellation.

The hot temperatures in July and August probably had Bordeaux vintners wondering if they were in California's Central Valley or Australia!  How would the relatively thin-skinned Merlot fare?  How would winemakers face such a challenge?

Our tasting group evaluated eight wines, ranging in price from $39 to $125 per bottle.  Seven of the eight wines received at least one first place vote and seven of the eight received at least one last place tally.  One wine, the one with no last place votes, outpaced the field by a modest margin.   Second place through fifth place were separated by a mere 9 points with 17 tasters voting.

Here's what we found:

8th Place:  CHTEAU CANON LA GAFFELIRE
A number of tasters rather liked this wine, but many found it not to their taste.  One person found it to be an "Elegant style, with layers of cedar-infused blackberry fruit with earth, mushrooms and spice.  Some minerality, too.  Dried floral notes and a funky note."  Someone else described this as "vegetal and band-aid-like...thin, disjointed and it has a short finish."  A third taster found "Brettanomyces, metallic notes and it's sour.  One panel member detected "wet leather and notes of brown sugar, but no finesse."  Final comments included "not an ager" and "low in acidity."
The leathery, meaty, Brettanomyces notes were not attractive to me.  There's a bit of smoky oak and tobacco, but I wonder if the Brett will eventually cover whatever grape is supporting it.  The wine is medium+ to full-bodied.  There are notes of deep, dark fruits and lots of "stuffing," but you have to be a fan of all the leather, saddle, meaty character to be a fan here.  The structure suggests 10-15 years of cellaring, but the Brett makes this a gamble.  Possibly a one star wine on my three star scale, no stars being an average or ordinary wine.

7th Place:  CHTEAU LA GAFFELIRE
"Hot, tannic, sour, astringent and metallic." were the words of one critic.  Someone else felt this was either "Over-pressed, over-extracted or both."  Another taster found it "Subtle and complex, with sweet chocolate and minerally, ripe plum notes.  There's a vanilla cream note and a mocha-like finish."  One person described this as "hot," while another mentioned "tobacco."  A final taster described the wine as "baked, with notes of cocoa powder and it's not attractive on the palate."
I noted some mildly dusty notes on the nose with red fruit elements.  It's reasonably nice from an aromatic standpoint.  Where the wine is a bit perplexing at this stage is its rather large structure.  There's quite a bit of tannin and the wine doesn't seem to support all the astringency at this stage.  Perhaps it will come into balance with five to 10 years in the bottle?   I suspect this will be a nice wine in a decade, but it's a bit unbalanced today.  One star.

6th Place:  CHTEAU CLOS FOURTET
"This is elegant and has a long finish," said one critic, adding "It's a wonderful wine!"  Another taster found it "tannic to excess, being bitter and sour, too."  Someone else found it "lightly oaked and it has flavors of sweet mochas cream, black fruit notes and coffee bean tones with smoky nuances."  One panel member felt it had "A lot of charred oak which gives this a coarse quality."  Anther taster described this as "Full and chewy with black cherry fruit and roasted meat notes."
I liked the cedar and sandalwood fragrances on the nose with hints of dark fruits.  I noted a hint of Brettanomyces as the wine has a mild leathery scent.  It's mouth-drying and tannic with dark fruit flavors.  For me, this was quite Bordeaux-like and it needs another decade to really soften and blossom.  I gave it one-and-a-half stars.

5th Place:  CHTEAU FLEUR CARDINALE
"There is a lot of ripe blackberry fruit to this wine, along with plum notes and some toasted oak.  There are floral tones and berryish notes with sweet fruit and molasses." said one taster.  Another described this as "Big, tarry and tannic.  It's got good length and is a bit sour."  Someone else mentioned finding a "must note to begin the tasting, but this seemingly blew off and I got a black raspberry note with nice balance."  A final critic mentioned "sour" as a descriptor.
I found this to be mildly plummy on the nose and it's ripe and big.  There was a note reminding me of a tea-like fragrance, too.  It's a good wine, but seemingly a big "quiet" or low intensity on the nose.  The overall balance is pretty good, as this sports mild berry flavors, red fruits and a hint of wood.  It's a bit more profound on the palate than it is on the nose.  I'd guess this to have a life span of about ten years, maybe more.  One-and-a-half stars.

4th Place:  VIRGINIE DE VALANDRAUD
One taster found "layers of dusty blackberry fruit and earthy plum notes.   There's lightly creamed coffee and pronounced, ripe fruit here and subtle oak."  Another taster found the wood "heavily charred and this made the fruit taste burnt."    Someone else found notes of "black olives and sweet oak."  "This was a big Bordeaux and a mouthful!  It's a bit tannic, however."  Another critic found "Smoky notes on the nose and some cigar box nuances with red slate and black cherries."
I found this wine to be most enchanting.  The fruit is plummy and classically "red" with notes of berries and some woodsy tones from the oak.  The oak contributes a sweet element to the fragrance.  Very nice nose.  Medium-bodied, this was equally charming on the palate, showing sweet wood and nice fruit.  It probably lacks the cellaring potential of other wines in this tasting, but the over all balance is delightful.  It's drinkable now and should remain in good condition for another 5-15 years.  Two+ stars.

3rd Place:  CHTEAU LA GOMERIE
"Soft and lush, this wine is very much a Merlot.  Soft." said one critic.  Another indicated they found a "moldy note on the nose and it's dumb and funky on the palate."  Someone else also encountered a flawed element here, saying "Initially I thought this might be corked."  One panel member found "off notes and some wet saddle tones and leather.  Anise, plum and some sage tones, there's an unpleasant saddle leather quality here."  Another taster found "Brettanomyces and some maple sugar notes, this seemed to improve over the course of the tasting."
I think what others found as flawed, I described as a pencil shavings sort of character on the nose.  I found the nose of this wine to be quite intriguing and I detected a bit of a curry powder fragrance here, too.  This seemed a tad hot, which I expected to find in many more of these wines in this tasting.  Still, this is a more long-term cellaring candidate, probably the longest of this set.  The tannin level makes this a bit less charming presently, but I'm hopeful for this wine's future.  One-and-a-half stars...maybe more in a few years.

2nd Place:  CHTEAU BEAU-SJOUR BCOT
One tasting participant felt this wine was "the most extracted and the most Parkerized wine of the line-up."  One taster felt this was "closed at the start of the tasting."  Another person felt it was produced from "over-ripe grapes but I thinks it's developed nicely since it was first poured and that I misjudged it.  It's better now."  One critic felt this "had great richness and texture.  There's a nice blackberry note and some mochas cream and chocolate-dipped caramel with vanilla cream."  A final taster felt this had "a touch more acidity than most of the wines."
This wine really opened nicely during the tasting.  It has red and black fruit aromas with a wonderful berry tone and mild oak on the nose.  It's medium+-bodied to full.  The wine shows dark fruit flavors with nice tannin and a dusty element.  It's lengthy and powerful and seems to be a good candidate for cellaring.  One-and-a-half stars+.  Fine.

1st Place:  TERTRE ROTEBOEUF
"This is a beauty," said one taster.  "It's got great fruit and good texture and a good finish."  One panel member found "Nicely toasted oak here with blackberry fruit and violet-like notes.  There's a tone of sweet earth and a silky finish."  Someone else said "This might be described by Robert Parker as 'fruit forward,' but it's got forward fruit.  The wine is opulent and has nice oak and ripe tannins along with a bit of heat."  Others said its aroma was "different" and a final critic knocked it for being "too sweet."
This wine was a bit dusty to start and showed nice red fruit notes.  It's sweetly oaked and offers nice ripe fruit aromas.  There's a red fruit aspect on the nose and palate here.  It's a "pretty" wine, but not terribly profound or complex.  The wine simply has charm and balance and you can drink it immediately.  One-and-a-half stars+.

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.
