2004 NORTHERN RHÔNES
A Blind-Tasting Comparison
Notes by
Gerald Weisl
wine merchant
The
2004 vintage is well-regarded amongst vintners in the Northern Rhône who were
delighted to not have a replay of the hellish 2003 growing
conditions. While 2003 saw hugely hot temperatures, the 2004 growing
season was mild during the spring and warm in June and July. A bit of rain
in August gave a bit of life to the parched vineyards and the weather remained
clear and dry throughout the harvest. This allowed winemakers
to more routinely determine when they'd like to harvest their grapes. As a
result, the vintage is one more involving the winemaker rather than one where
vintners were racing against Mother Nature.
Perhaps we've been tasting too many New World Syrahs, but only one of this
flight of wines had a deep, dark color to it. Many were similar in hue to
Burgundy. I found a couple of wines to be quite oaky. Only one
seemed to really capture the "soul" of Northern Rhône Syrah.
Two wines outpaced the pack, with four wines within 7 points of the top
spot. This means one taster's ranking could have dramatically changed the
results. A couple of wines were well off the pace, one being a bit dirty
and the other more reminiscent of cru Beaujolais than deep, complex Syrah.

Ellen was unable to taste with us. Here's what we found:

8th Place: BERNARD BURGAUD 2004 COTE-ROTIE
Most of the comments and rankings of this wine were negative. The
over-riding character of Brettanomyces made this unattractive to most tasters,
with all but one taster placing this in the bottom half of their rankings.
One taster politely called this "rustic," while someone else described
it as "horsy and barnyardy. We're really in deep doo-doo with
this."
Burgaud's wine displayed a medium-ruby color, with a good violet robe.
Initially it showed berry fruit with a hint of a gamey note, but this continued
to blossom into full-blown leathery, horsy, Brettanomyces. It's a
medium-light bodied wine with gamey, meaty flavors. Eventually the Brett
takes center stage and there's not enough 'clean' Syrah fruit here to warrant
interest. No stars on my three star scale, meaning this is a standard, or
perhaps less-than-good, bottle of wine.

7th Place: GUIGAL 2004 CROZES HERMITAGE
We included this wine as a bit of a marker. We wanted to see how a
lower-priced wine would fare amongst so many expensive bottles and having great
respect for Guigal, we launched this into the flight. Only three out of 14
tasters had this ranked in the "upper" division of their rankings.
One taster found it "sweet and showing nutmeg spice tones."
Another critic found it "Sour, thin and short on fruit." Someone
else described this as "monolithic and simple." One panel member
characterized the Guigal wine as "more reminiscent of a Southern Rhone
wine" and a few other tasters agreed. Someone suggested much of its
character was derived from a whole berry fermentation and a final voice said it
"drifts off and lacks intensity."
Showing medium-light ruby color, this wine offers a lovely sweet berry fragrance
with strawberry nuances. Finally I decided it was more reminiscent of a
good cru Beaujolais such as a Morgon than it was of a Northern Rhone
Syrah. It's got nice body and a charmingly fruity theme. Nice
structure and plenty of fruit, it's a wonderful "picnic" wine. I
gave it a one star rating, more for its charm than for being varietally-correct.
6th Place: JEAN-MICHEL GERIN 2004 COTE-ROTIE "Champin Le
Seigneur"
Described by one panel member as "Wonderful! This shows hints
of smoky bacon, wet stones and spice. It's a bit 'tough' on the palate,
but it has good potential." Another critic wished for "more
structure. This is clean and fruity, but I wanted more
intensity." Someone else correctly identified this wine as
"having Viognier as it's showing a nicely floral tone." (Gerin
incorporates about 10% Viognier, we're told.) Others faulted the wine for
being a "bit light." Someone else said "It has a great nose
and is soft, approachable and light."
I found a medium-light ruby color to this sweetly cherryish red. It's
showing a light bit of oak, but has the fruit more up-front than Gerin's
"more important" wines. It's medium-bodied with nice fresh,
bright berry flavors. There's a good 'edge' to it from acidity and light
tannins. I gave this a one star rating as it's a pretty wine.
5th Place: JEAN-MICHEL GERIN 2004 COTE-ROTIE "Les Grandes
Places"
"This is pretty! It's spicy, with hints of violets and
oak. A class act!" said one fan. Another voice described it as
"Absolutely typical Cote-Rotie." Someone else found "a
great nose, with hints of currants and figs. It's a bit tannic,
though." One person mentioned it being "dusty and very
tannic. But there's a lot going on in this wine." Another
critic also found "dusty notes and hints of peanuts. It's a big, deep
wine."
My low ranking of this wine was due to it having been oaked to a
fare-thee-well. This bottling is loaded with oak and as nice as the wood
is, it dominates to the exclusion of the fruit. At one point this struck
me as being reminiscent of some well-aged, long-time-in-oak brandies. The
winemaker, aided by a barrel builder, has overtaken the grape grower and it may
be several years before the wine starts to show up as a Rhone Syrah. In
the meantime, it's simply more wood than you can shake a stick at, as we say.
4th Place: DOMAINE
des REMIZIÉRES 2004 HERMITAGE "Cuvée Emilié"
One taster remarked "This is so
dark in color, but it's not as intense on the palate and so I was disappointed,
even though somebody squeezed the hell out of these grapes." Another critic
described this as "big and brooding," while someone else characterized
it as "Smokier and charred." Other descriptors included
"bittersweet cocoa" and "peach pie aromas."
This was deep and dark in color, substantially more intense than the rest
of the field, with deep ruby tones. I found a hint of jam or a slightly
cooked fruit element with lightly spicy notes. I wondered if this wasn't
more from the 2003 vintage than 2004. It's full-bodied on the palate and
plump, juicy, ripe with dark plums and berries. Moderately tannic, this is
a nice mouthful, being deep and dense. I gave this one-and-a-half
stars. Nice now and it can go for 5-10 more years.

3rd Place: JEAN-MICHEL GERIN 2004 COTE ROTIE "La Landonne"
" Oak and vanilla, vanilla and oak, but no 'guts' " were the
words of one panel member. Another person detected a trace of
"Brettanomyces," while someone else found "aromatic wood notes
such as cedar and sandalwood." A detractor knocked this for
"being weak on the mid-palate and it has a tart finish. A final
critic said "I liked the fruit and this has good structure."
From my tasting vantage, I found a nice cherry elixir, but not a grand, deep,
complex Rhone Syrah. The wine offers a medium-intense ruby color verging
on deep garnet. The bouquet opens to show woodsy and mildly oaky
notes. It's less oaky than Gerin's "Les Grandes Places"
bottling, but it's still aimed at those who prefer wood in their wine. The
flavors are oaky, woodsy and dominate the mildly berryish red fruit notes.
I enjoyed tasting this, but wouldn't spend so much money just to have a bit of
fruit and some nice oak. One star, but you might expect more for this
famous of a vineyard site and this price.

2nd PLACE: CHAPOUTIER 2004 COTE-ROTIE "La Mordoree"
One taster felt this was "a classic Rhone wine." Another
person found "white pepper notes," while someone else said it was
"a tad tannic, more astringent and harsh. It got better over the
course of the tasting, though." One panel member felt this was
"much too tannic and really drying on the palate." Another
taster found "Tar and rhubarb notes on the nose and a sour finish with a
bit of heat."
With medium-ruby color, this wine shows a nicely fruity element on the
nose. Very berryish with hints of peppercorns, which I found
attractive. There's a delightfully fruity flavor, with tones of raspberry
and cherry. Nice length, too. One-and-a-half stars. Good wine.

1st Place: MICHEL & STEPHANE OGIER 2004 COTE ROTIE
"This is the archetypical Rhone Syrah," said the first critic,
adding "It's a great wine, though it could be a tad more
complex." Another person found "Spicy, dark berry fruit and some
pepper with smoky, spicy, briary notes and a long finish." A third
critic found "good body and length," while someone else marked this
down for having "too much black pepper." Taking issue with that
assertion was one panel member who said "You can't have too much
pepper!"
This medium-deep ruby colored wine offered a nice herbal fragrance which, for
me, was unmistakable as anything other than Rhone Syrah. Notes of berries,
spice and olive-like, tapenade fragrances are prominent on the nose. The
wine is medium+ bodied and shows lovely Rhone flavors. Plenty of spice and
terroir, with hints of anise. The flavors are deep and intense,
being quite typical of good Rhone red. Two-and-a-half stars. Very
fine.
