1998 California Chardonnays

We arranged a set of high-profile, big-time
California Chardonnays. This was one of those events when the commonality in the
wines gave this set of Chardonnays far less "drama."
The wines were more similar than different.
 All big (most having more than
14% alcohol).
All lavishly oaked.
I have found that tasting almost any single wine in this tasting will provide a
great deal of pleasure. Lining them up causes their rich and intense qualities to
become ordinary, when any of these is a mighty good glass of wine one-at-a-time.
As far as the statistics go, these are within a rather narrow band of
quality, so it's not surprising that the total points for each are so closely bunched.

Bob Gorman's Notes
Our recent tasting of Clos Vougeot showed a narrow range of differences and
preferences reflected in the scoring. That is exactly what you would expect, given that
they were eight wines from a single vineyard and a single vintage.
Our tasting of California Chardonnays presented something of the same phenomenon, with
five wines separated by a mere 8 points on our scoring system. But these were wines drawn
from a diversity of appellations (Sonoma, Russian River, Carneros, Edna Valley, e.g.). Is
this telling us something, namely that Chardonnay-making techniques have become
inordinately inbred in California? Individuality, “terroir” seems to have been
obliterated in the service of a statistical “marketing ideal,” sacrificed to the
demand for “buttery Chardonnay.”
It is “damning with faint praise” when tasters describe a wine as a “nice
cocktail Chardonnay.” Another quipped “Bartender, pour me another glass of that
buttery Chardonnay!”
Perhaps we have forgotten that Chardonnay, dry and expressing its point of origin, can
play a very special role as part of the dining experience. How often have we remarked:
“what is this dull, flat, ponderous THING doing on our dinner table?”
Several of the wines in the tasting seemed to be going for “showy” at all costs.
Perhaps only the Chardonnays of Peter Michael and Baileyana, included in the tasting, went
to prove that Chardonnay with concentration of fruit and liveliness on the palate is not
beyond the capabilities of California winemakers.

8th Place: FLOWERS 1998 Sonoma Coast
CHARDONNAY
There was a surprise at the low end of the Totem Pole, namely Flowers
Sonoma Coast. A pair of tasters liked it for being “dry, toasty, hinting of lemon
zest and butterscotch” but the majority found it “hot, bitter, lean and mean
with notes of oxidation (“fallen apples”) and cellar odors. I found
it sharp-toned. Lees contact (a technique currently in fashion in Chardonnay production)
had given it dirty, hydrogen sulfide and cardboard notes in the nose. I found it odd, even
bizarre, and hot on the palate.
Gerald's Notes: I liked its mildly toasty, pear-like fruit at the start,
but as the wine warmed, I thought I detected a cellar or cork smell which caused me to
eliminate this from contention. I'd say it's worth re-tasting before passing final
judgment on this.
7th Place: Arrowood 1998 Sonoma County Cuve Michel Berthoud-Reserve
Spciale CHARDONNAY
Seventh-place Arrowood “Reserve Speciale” was found to have
a “nice balance of fruit and oak” by one taster but others found it “thin
and short” and more than one noted an excess of sulfur and another found it crude and
“Chilean.” In the aroma I found subdued oak and Malo-lactic notes giving it a
nice buttery tone with additional complexity in its minerally and leesy notes but once on
the palate it became simple, ponderous and even thin and watery. Refer to Gerald’s
comments on Norm Roby’s assessment of the above two wines and the concomitant
“wine politics”.
Gerald's Notes: Fruity aromas with mildly toasty oak...seemed dry but with a rather
hot impression on the palate from the alcohol...Hot!
6th Place: FISHER 1998 Sonoma County "Whitney's Vineyard"
CHARDONNAY
In sixth place, the Fisher Sonoma “Whitney’s Vineyard” found
considerable favor for its relatively “lighter touch, smelling younger than the
others.” Other tasters liked its “big toasty oak and grassy/appley
fruit” and “balance (best of the series)” with hints of “papaya”
and “lime”. Others found fault with its “residual sugar” and
“high alcohol.” I found straightforward, ripe Chardonnay fruit with a
candy-like edge and hints of melon and white grapes on the palate but marked it down for
its hot finish.
Gerald's Notes: I liked the combination of fresh pear and peach aromas with the
hint of smokiness on the nose. I found a minerally character on the palate and a
crisper "edge" to this wine than most of the others, hence a high ranking.
5th PLACE: FISHER 1998 Russian River Valley "O'Connor Vineyard"
CHARDONNAY
Slightly more favorable was the Fisher Russian River “O’Connor
Vineyard” but this was a curious wine with “unmistakable notes of botrytis, the
so-called "Noble Mold.” Another liked its “high energy” and
“assertive oak” but another found it “flabby and dull.” I thought that
the botrytis note gave it a honey-like tone, sweet smelling, curious, nice. But what do
you do with it? A salad of blue cheese, pear and walnut, perhaps? Or as a “cocktail
wine” said another!
Gerald's Notes: I found this to be rather fruity and a bit floral with
light oak on the nose...it was big, fat, ripe and fruity in the mouth, but marked by a
streak of heat.
4th Place BAILEYANA 1998 Edna Valley "Firepeak" CHARDONNAY
The Baileyana Edna Valley “Firepeak Vineyard” garnered
fourth place with its “big toasty oak character and minerals,” “tight
but showing good potential.” Another found “pineapple and guava” while
another found “nothing to like, having a ‘burnt’ character”. An astute
taster found “citric notes accompanied by heat leading to the suspicion that it had
been doctored with citric acid.” I found a big, fat, oak and malo-lactic influenced
wine, reminding of melon and illusive sweet spice. I found it remarkably lively for such
ripe fruit, long and nicely distributed over the palate with a nice clean finish. I felt
that the concentration of fruit obviated the need for the addition of citric acid.
Gerald's Notes: Mild pear and ripe apple fruit aromas were backed by
toasty, sweet oak. Not sure if this is bone dry, but it's a lovely, big, fruity/oaky
stylish Chardonnay.
3rd Place: SAINTSBURY 1998 Carneros "Reserve" CHARDONNAY
Third place Saintsbury Carneros Reserve appealed to one for its “sweet fruit
(with hints of banana) and oak.” Others found a nice “viscosity” and
“cinnamon spice” but detractors found it “dead simple!”, “harsh
(tannic) and dry with a short, hot finish.” My notes agreed with one taster
describing it as “the simplest possible incarnation of Chardonnay fruit."
I noted white grapes and candied ginger in the nose but tasted a wine that was too fat,
ripe, rich and overdone
Gerald's Notes: Didn't find much fruit to this lightly oaked,
standard-issue Chardonnay. It was more interesting, though, on the palate:
mildly buttery with toasted hazelnuts and a bit of heat from the alcohol (though the label
indicated 13.8%, lowest of this grouping).
2nd Place: PATZ & HALL 1998 Russian River
Valley "Dutton Ranch" CHARDONNAY
Second place Patz and Hall generated considerable controversy. It was
described as “fabulous!,” “Meursault-like” with exceptional oak,
vanilla and “crme brle" on the one hand and on the other as
“seriously underfruited, flabby, empty and sweet (residual sugar)." I
found nice toasty oak, leesy notes and a nicely centered Chardonnay fruit that somehow
faded in the glass and came up short on the palate.
Gerald's Notes: Big, toasty oak on the nose with lots of vanilla bean
and vanillin notes...woodsy....off dry, perhaps? On the palate, medium toasty, sweet
oak flavors...this is a big, complete, full, rich, very showy Chardonnay. Big, toasty oak on the nose with lots of vanilla bean

1st Place: PETER MICHAEL 1998 Sonoma County 'Belle Cte' CHARDONNAY
Curiously, I was the only one to give first place Peter Michael Sonoma
“Belle Cote” a first place vote but, well, I’m a sucker for any Peter
Michael Chardonnay. He (or his staff) is certainly one of the masters working
in California today. One of the tasters remarked “killer Chardonnay!”
while others liked it for its “ripe pears,” “green apple” and
“complexity.” Another taster noted its decidedly “unfined and
unfiltered” style, but it was also found to be “over-ripe and
ponderous.” I loved its nicely ripe Chardonnay fruit with traces of honey,
spice, minerals and wood. Balanced and dry, I thought that the excellent acidity
served to spread the flavors all over the palate and give a long, clean finish. Lovely
wine!
Gerald's Notes: Very fruity, ripe and mildly toasty oak...the fragrance
was almost Riesling or Viognier-like. I thought this, too, might be off-dry.
It is certainly a mouth-full! Lots of pear-like fruit flavors with
creamy, sweet oak on the palate.
