1999 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
A Blind-Tasting Comparison
March 9, 2005

Notes by
Gerald Weisl
wine merchant

The wines of Montalcino have risen dramatically in price over the past few years; this despite an increase in the total number of hectares planted within the region and a proliferation of new wineries.  It seems anything bearing the name Brunello is now a $50 to $75 bottle and you'll pay more for much sought-after names if you can find them.

Brunello di Montalcino has long been a wine with aspirations to greatness.  Consumers have a right to expect "greatness" when they pay high prices for these wines.  The 1999 vintage is regarded by the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino as a 4 star year on their 5 star scale.

The start of the growing season in 1999 was warm and the summer was rather dry until late August.   Some rain helped rejuvenate the vines and the harvest in Montalcino began rather early, most producers finishing by the third week of September.

We put together a set of wines from some of our favorite "usual suspects" as well as some other potentially new "favorites."

A couple of wines lagged behind the group with three wines out-pacing the pack.

Ellen was away on her French research project so she was not able to assess this set of wines.

Here's what we found:

8th Place:  ANGELINI 1999 "Vigna Spuntali" Brunello di Montalcino
Finishing well behind the pack, this wine has usually fared well in our tastings, so the last place ranking is a surprise.  The negative comments were largely that the wine is prematurely old.  One critic said "It tastes old," while another described the character as "oxidized."  Someone else felt this wine is "tired," while one person tagged the wine as being "more like Chianti than Brunello."
I described it, more charitably, as "rustic Italian red wine."  It's not a modern-styled wine and I can agree with those who found the wine in an advanced state of maturity.  Despite its "older" character, the wine has a lashing of tannin which makes it a gamble in terms of cellaring.  I still would consider this as a one star wine on my three star scale, no stars being an ordinary bottle.

7th Place:  COSTANTI 1999 Brunello di Montalcino
One taster described this as "low acid and flat." Someone else echoed this sentiment finding it "low acid, light, meaty and leathery, with some dried cherry notes."  More positively was a critic who  found "nice, young fruit notes and light plummy aromas with good length as it has a long finish."  Someone else found it to be showing "roasted coffee notes.  It has nice texture and lower acidity with cherry flavors.  Simple."  Bob Gorman found elements of "cinnamon and cherry Jell-o."
I didn't find the nose to be very expressive, but rather simply vinous.  It's cherryish on the palate, but I'd peg this more as a good, solid, little Chianti than a grand Brunello.

6th Place:  IL PALAZZONE  1999 Brunello di Montalcino
A few tasters reacted to the texture of this wine.  One called it "bitter," while another found it to be "sour."  A third said "It's very rustic with dried cherry notes and some fruit leaves...very Tuscan!"  Another taster found "sweet fruit elements here and some rhubarb-like notes.  It needs time, too."  One critic found it to be "high in acidity with a hint of cola on the nose and it has a rather crisp finish."  Someone else commented that this "needs more fruit to balance the tannins."  A final critic argued this as being "very angular and disjointed."
I detected hints of candied orange peel on the nose and the aromas seemed to show signs of maturity and ripeness.  The flavors are more intense, with some chalky tannins and lots of cherryish Sangiovese fruit.  I felt this offers some finesse on the palate and it's a young, cellarworthy wine.  One-and-a-half stars.

5th Place:  PIETRANERA "LA VELONA"  1999 Brunello di Montalcino
"This started out nicely, being balanced between fruit and oak, but then it became disjointed and it tanked." said one detractor.  Someone else described it as showing notes of "Barnyard at first.  Then it displayed some oak and vanilla with a lightly mild cherry tone.  This was followed by some tart, citrusy notes but it fell apart at the end."  One taster mentioned its "barrique-styling and a more internationally-styled red, but I liked it better than many of the other wines."  Someone else likened this to "Beaujolais since it has lots of strawberry notes and it didn't seem to show much of a tannic structure."  One person mentioned its "rich fruit but the tannin and acidity make this an awkward wine at this stage."
I was intrigued by the nose of this wine.  It displayed an earthy quality, making it a more terroir-driven wine for me.  I found hints of tea and tobacco along with a hint of oak.  It's a really complex wine on the palate, combining various elements from the nose.  It's a good, youthful wine with finesse and subtlety and yet retaining its typicity as a Brunello.  I gave it a two star rating, noting it has 8-15 years of life ahead of it.

4th Place:  CAPARZO 1999 Brunello di Montalcino "Vigna La Casa"
One taster remarked "I liked the nose as it offers some wild strawberry fruit and it's a bit floral, but this dissipated on the palate."  Another person interpreted the aromatics as "menthol and eucalyptus, with muted fruit notes and it seems rather closed on the mid-palate.  The finish is a bit weak, having a mushroomy note."  One panel member found it to have "great, bright fruit and it improved in the glass."  Another person found it to have "ripe fruit and a bold mid-palate...might not really be a traditionally-styled wine..." And a final taster tabbed it as certainly a "traditionally-styled Brunello."
I found the aromas to be superb!  The wine has a ripe cherry fruit component along with some sweet wood in the form of French oak.  The wine quite rich on the palate (rich for European wine, not a goopy, heavy Californian or Australian!) with lovely texture.  There's ample fruit to balance the tannins.  This is good and it's young, but shows tremendous promise.  Two stars!

3rd Place:  SIRO PACENTI 1999 Brunello di Montalcino
"This shows a beautiful Chianti or Sangiovese nose, but it's less exciting on the palate.  It's fairly bitter and I question whether or not it has sufficient fruit for the tannin level."  Another critic knocked this for being "bitter."  One person felt "it got better as it sat in the glass.  I found a fair bit of oak here, too."  Someone else pegged this as "classic Brunello, but it's not 'great' Brunello."  Another person mentioned it "has good length."
I found the nose of this wine to be outstanding.  It's deeply cherryish and has a wonderful cedar component and a hint of vanilla.  It's medium-full on the palate with lots of Brunello-like cherry fruit flavors and a touch of anise, as well.  I ranked this highly for being typical, stylish and balanced.  For my palate it's nearly flawless!  I gave it a two-and-a-half star rating.

2nd Place:  GAJA'S "PIEVE SANTA RESTITUTA" 1999 Brunello di Montalcino "Sugarille"
One panel member found this to be "rather fruity and pure cherry-like notes.  It developed into a more cola-like character with time, showing a more smoky quality.  Aging will certainly enhance this wine."  Another person found it to be "oak-dominated with hints of cola and vanilla.  There's a cherry cordial finish to this."  Someone else found it to have "concentrated fruit.  Long term, this should be great!"  Seconding that sentiment was a taster who characterized this as a "long-lived wine that's obviously fruity and has plenty of fruit structure.  A bit difficult to judge at this stage since it needs so much time."  One panel member found it to be "full of fruit with strawberry, cherry and raspberry notes.  This improved the most over the course of the tasting."
I found a high-toned cherry character here which reminded me of a kirsch eau-de-vie.  It's definitely Italian red and a lovely, young, "baby" of a Brunello.  The wine has the acidity of a good, cellar-worthy Brunello with good length on the palate and plenty of typicity.  I pegged it as a one-and-a-half star wine at this stage with room for improvement.

1st Place: FANTI "Tenuta San Filippo" 1999 Brunello di Montalcino
One taster dubbed this "a steam-roller of a wine.  It's really overpowering!"  Another critic found the wine to have a "nice balance of fruit and wood."  Someone else found "dark cherry fruit and some pencil lead notes with good, well-integrated tannins."  Another person found it to be the "fullest" bodied wine of the tasting.  One taster noted "It's darker, bigger and impressive."  Someone else felt it's "Overly extracted."  One wag asked "Is this fortified with Port, perhaps?"  Another critic found it "straightforward and linear."
My notes show this to have had the darkest color of the set of wines;  more Cabernet than Sangiovese.  The aromas are of ripe berries and some dried fig notes.  It's also showing dark plums.  On the palate the wine is quite full, but a shade softer and more plush than most of the others.  I felt it is less typical than many of the other wines in the set, being ripe, big and tannic, yet with a rounder, softer edge.  I gave it a one star to one-and-a-half star rating.

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.

WE HAVE NOT ORGANIZED A TASTING IN A WHILE...
BUT WE DO POST THE RESULTS OF A PRIVATE TASTING GROUP THAT'S BEEN MEETING FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS!

We are working on organizing some blind-tastings at the shop.
