FANCY CALIFORNIA MERLOTS
August 2, 2000

Notes by Bob Gorman
There is good reason for the explosion of interest in California Merlots. The wines are generally easy, open and user-friendly, serving as a bridge for people who were previously red wine shy. Set on your dinner party table for a mix of experienced and inexperienced palates they can satisfy both ends of the spectrum.

This was made abundantly clear in this tasting. There were several wines that even the most fastidious connoisseur could relate to, wines of considerable substance and winemaking finesse. And yet, as the mix of first and last place votes indicate, even the lesser wines had no trouble finding favor with several tasters.

Here's what we found:

THE WINES Gerald's Rank Ellen's Rank Bob's Rank GROUP RANKING Total Points 1/2/8ths

8th Place:  NEWTON 1997 Napa Unfiltered Special Cuvée MERLOT
Least liked but staunchly defended by a couple of tasters, the Newton ’97 Napa “Unfiltered Special Cuvée” showed “skunky,” “wet leather,” Brettanomyces characteristics.  One taster found “tomato stem” while another found the wine “sour, bitter and tannic”.  A “knock-off Cab” commented another. A defender acknowledged the “Bretty,” "silage” character but liked its “Merlot fruit, tobacco and complexity.”  Once past the “Bretty” component, Bob found “Cassis, olives, capers and fairly generous fruit – a bit curious, not for everybody but still quite attractive.”
Gerald said the wine was "standard," but a bit coarse and not terribly charming."

7th Place:  MATANZAS CREEK 1997 Sonoma Valley MERLOT
The Matanzas Creek ’97 Sonoma scored a notch higher but it should be noted that it had seven 7th place votes.  One taster found “clearly defined varietal character but a lack of charm” and another “nice fruit and ripeness” but a third found it “warm and over-ripe.”  More than one objected to its “green, unripe tannins” and “even sharper tannins contributed by the oak.”   Bob found the nose a bit “shrill with notes of blackberry jam. On the palate it was even more jammy and ‘stewed’ with faltering concentration.”
Gerald found the nose, at first sniff, to be extremely attractive.  However, the wine "never really continued to blossom and other wines 'caught up' and surpassed.  Perhaps not quite as much 'stuffing' to this one as I expected."

6th Place:  STERLING 1997 Napa "Three Palms Vineyard" MERLOT
Sixth-place Sterling ’97 “Three Palms Vineyard” showed one taster “bright, red fruit characteristics, pleasant but simple.” Another found it “an early drinker with fruit faltering in the center” and yet another found “oak, oak and more oak.”  Someone questioned whether it had residual sugar but another suggested that it was an impression given by its low acidity.   Another taster hit the nail on the head commenting that it had “Paso Robles-like fruit.”  Bob found it bright on the nose with “generous Merlot fruit: cherries, sweet herbs and spices but less than bright on the palate.”  He also found a note of “plums” corroborating a descriptive note on the back label.
Gerald found "Good, sweet cedary notes with nice vanillin on the nose.  Smooth on the palate, this is a supple, polished, round red with sweet, ripe fruit.  Probably not a long-term ager, but good right now."

5th Place:  DUCKHORN 1997 Napa-ESTATE GROWN MERLOT
A fan of this Merlot found “sweet oak, herbal fruit, balance, depth and focus” while less enthusiastic tasters found it “lean, narrowly focused, closed-in, tart, astringent and a bit mean.” Bob found a big, extracted, oaky, ripe Merlot that avoided being jammy for all its ripeness. “You almost HAVE to be impressed! A Merlot to love” but not, he added, for extended cellaring.
Gerald described it as having "nice cedary notes with black fruit aromas and a woodsy quality.  It's fairly big and moderately tannic with a slightly coarse texture on the palate. "

4th Place:  RIDGE VINEYARDS 1997 Santa Cruz Mountains MERLOT
Several tasters found the fourth-place Ridge ’97 Santa Cruz Mountains showing “excellent varietal character, nice wood background, appropriate tannins, high energy with hints of violets and tobacco.” Others were uncomfortable with its “high acid and tannin.”  Another tasted noted this was   "one of the few wines not slaughtered by tannins."  Bob found “mint and other sweet herbs, elegance and a creamy, lactic note from the secondary (malo-lactic) fermentation.  Balance, structure and concentration bode well for considerable further development; a terrific bottle!"
Gerald found the nose "deep, complex, berryish with a smoky/toasty character.   Bright and crisp-edged on the palate, this was quite good."

3rd Place:  PAHLMEYER 1997 Napa MERLOT
The Pahlmeyer ’97 Napa won third place with its “excellent varietal character, sweet oak and hints of green tobacco, menthol, and green olives.” One taster found it “hedonistic.” Someone else remarked it was "sadistic."  Another described it as being reminiscent of "dried basil, sweet oak and dried cherries."  Bob marked it down for its “raspberry jam” and “less than lively” fruit and its rather hot, even peppery, finish. “And yet it is still one nice mouthful!”
Gerald gave this a very high rating, describing the nose as being "ripe, big, fruity and nicely oaked...almost ethereal with hints of violets or roses (sort of like some Cabernet Franc wines).  Very long on the palate, with some 'grip' from the tannins.  Nice cedary finish."

2nd Place:  DUCKHORN 1997 Napa "Three Palms Vineyard" MERLOT
Rounding out the ‘97’s on the list was second-place Duckhorn Three Palms Vineyard.  Several tasters noted that the wine started out slow but developed considerably in the glass.  There was “rich herbal fruit, excellent varietal character, cedary and slightly ‘dusty’ nose with hints of violets and tart Loganberries (!)” Another admired its “luscious, smooth texture on the palate.” A detractor found it lacking in focus and short. Bob thought that its balance, concentration and layered complexity, which emerged as the wine opened up, indicated several more years of further development.
Gerald found it to have a similarly "woodsy" note to Duckhorn's other entrant in this tasting.  "There's a plum-like fruit element with some intensity and framed by a bit of wood.  Fairly tannic, so 5-8 years of aging is not out of the question."

1st Place:  PRIDE MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS 1998 Napa/Sonoma MERLOT
The clear winner but helped by being a year younger and fresher was the difficult to find Pride Mountain ’98  (64%Napa, 36% Sonoma).  Most found this simply a lovely, ripe, nicely extracted and complex Merlot.  One taster pegged it quite accurately as “Leonetti (Washington) style.” Another taster, however,  was disturbed by a “vulcanized, H2S character.”   Bob found a nice generosity to it with jammy and borderline over-ripe notes.   He was surprised that the “amer” (bitter) component to the tannins didn't scare off more of the tasters.
Gerald found "lots of vanillin and toasty oak to this showy, mocha-like fragrance of this wine.  Rich and velvety on the palate, its mild tannins are nicely integrated in the background, making for a very fine bottle of wine. "

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.
