Alexia and Henry hosted the annual birthday bash honoring
Henry poured the Piper Heidsieck Rose Sauvage Champagne...
And we toasted Sandy...
We all sat at the table as Alexia and Henry prepared the first course...
Henry stir-fried some veggies and turkey for "lettuce wraps."
Alexia showed off her skills as a Wrap Artist...
The main plate featured Salmon and Chanterelles.
We had two 2003 Pinot Noirs...
Russian Hill was nicely fruity, with dark cherries and a touch of wood.
The Dutton Goldfield from their Jewell Block vineyard, was cherryish, too, but
showed a more smoky note from the oak.
Both were showing beautifully and seemed to be at their peak.
Brian took care of extracting the corks from the bottles for Alexia's cheese
He then continued his gig as "Sommelier" by pouring both the 2007 and
2007 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands Echezeaux wines...
Henry was busy chain-sawing Jonathan's breads...
The 2007 Grands Echezeaux was showing nicely, with hints of
forest floor and some mildly oaky tones. The 2008 was quite youthful and
really was too young to drink. The nose had not developed much to this
point and the wine needs another 5 years in bottle.
Parenthetically, we tasted a 2001 of Mongeard's a few weeks before opening these
and the wine was stunning. I guessed it to be a DRC Echezeaux of some
moderately recent vintage and the host said "Good guess, actually!"
Alexia opened a nice bottle of Graham's Porto for dessert...a 1996 LBV which was
sweet, balanced and oh-so-ready to drink.
Finding it to be no time like the present, Sandy set about opening a few
