An Impromptu Saturday Night Supper
Chez Lucy & Jonathan
Jonathan & Lucy were hosting Richard and Anne Tolmach, so
they figured "Might as well make things more complicated and invite Gerald,
Amy, Jesper, Dane and Alanna, too."
I got there well into darkness and found the oven fired up, full throttle.
This is unusual:
Jonathan's asleep and Whisper is wide awake.
Lucy's backyard is full of tulips!
I brought a "home-made" Italian styled salami made
by some friends and Jonathan shaved it truffle-thin.
Meanwhile, a couple of Lucy's patented veggie "pies" were waiting for
all to enjoy.
Dane and Alanna were having a grand old time rolling around on the floor.
We opened what turned out to be a nice bottle of Olivier
Leflaive's St. Aubin.
Kitchen tools were everywhere!
Jonathan used them to whack up one of Lucy's patented pies.
We opened a Les Cretes 2003 "Torrette" from the Val d'Aosta in
Italy. It was a lovely, supple, fruity red.
Lucy took a moment to say "grace."
Then it was "Serve Yourself Time" in the kitchen.
Home-grown artichokes are amazingly delicious! We have a big pan of
oven-roasted root vegetables to go along with the pork roast.
Jonathan opened a bottle of the famous 1997 Ojai Vineyard "Henry
Daniel" Syrah. This was big, cedary and showing every bit as nicely
as it did when it was first released.
I popped open what turned out to be a corked bottle of Barbaresco. The
Altero Brunello from the 1999 vintage was a big jammy and showing really ripe
fruit. This is saying something, since the Ojai wine was also very ripe!
Unfortunately, Dane and Alanna's parents suddenly "hit the wall" (as
they say) and became cranky, so the kids had to escort them home.
The rest of enjoyed another sip of wine and some dessert!
Thanks for a great, impromptu evening!
