The Birthday Boys'
Hosted by Chef Bob Gorman
January 30, 2005
We began with a magnum of Bruno Paillard's excellent Premire Cuve Champagne.
Birthday Boy Henry Moore took care of pouring the bubbly for everyone.
The other Birthday Boy, Paul Obester, was more interested in drinking than in
Henry chimed in "Moi, aussi!"
Marjorie was enjoying the festivities, too.
Meanwhile, Paul gave Bob a hand in preparing the first course.
Bob then sauted some chanterelles which Henry "caught" this past
week. There were some black chanterelles which Bob foraged, too.
We then got everyone seated and Cliff took care of lighting the candles.
Bob was whistling "Dixie" as he chopped some parsley for
garnishing the trout.
Happily, he did not whack off his finger in the process.
Truites Souffls aux Champignons Sauvages with Marcel Deiss 2001 Pinot Blanc.
The wine was simply outstanding paired with this dish.
Marjorie got busy!
Bob was steaming...
...carrots and potatoes.
Bob's Choucroute Royale.
Ready to serve!
Alexia is demanding another sausage and an additional piece of smoked pork, much
to Sandy's surprise.
Both Paul and Henry nearly fainted when this happened (hey...they're getting
old...what do you expect when they're shocked?).
We had several nice Rieslings with this.
A trio of 2001s--
Lucien Albrecht's Grand Cru "Pfingtsberg" was dry and mildly floral.
Paul Zinck's Grand Cru from "Rangen" was good, if a bit sweet.
My favorite was the Marcel Deiss 2001 "Beblenheim" bottling.
This was dry, crisp and a good palate-cleanser with all the sausages.
We had a nice variety of mustards...my favorite was the more "hot" and
sharp Colman's English mustard.
Bob prepared a lovely sorbet of Gewrztraminer.
After this delectable palate cleanser, Bob brought out the traditional birthday
In this instance, a Tarte au Rhubarbe.
Alexia shows off the sensational Trockenbeerenauslese Riesling of M & M
Leitner of Austria. This was a superb wine!
(Even Alexia drained her glass, despite her profound dislike of Riesling!)
Birthday gifts came next...
Henry is a Gin fanatic...
...not to mention cornichons.
Paul admires a gift bottle presented by Amy & Jesper FitzJensen: A Villa
Cafaggio "San Martino."
Bob presented Henry with a wonderful bottle named after the recipient:
Meanwhile, the TBA Riesling from Leitner was superb!
And so...another lovely evening of High Gastronomy.
