Food, Wine & Friends-Page 110
Hosted by Lucy & Jonathan, with Steve & Thalia Lubin.
On a nice summer evening we celebrated Alexia's Birthday
for the second time in a week.
Henry went to the cellar and brought some Tolmach Beer to wet our whistles.
Jonathan grows "Raphanus sativus," the Mnchner Bier Radish which
is delightful accompanied by a good brew.
We then had the 2003 Schramsberg "Blanc de
Noirs." This bubbly is really excellent...quite dry and mildly
The birthday girl has hardly aged at all since last Sunday's fest!
The second bottle of bubbly was the 1988 Veuve Clicquot "Gold Label"
and this was "golden" in all aspects. Very rich and toasty!
Jonathan was having a wrestling match with a big piece of salmon and the rest of
the crew departed for a look at Filoli in August.
The oven was hotter than the beer radish and ready for
roasting the salmon!
We started in the "backyard" vegetable garden, a
We would see this Italian Basil again...soon!
Meanwhile, the rose garden was extraordinary.
Avid Bicyclist Steve Lubin suggests to Lucy that she consider digging up some
of the garden and installing a velodrome.
Steve, obviously, must have combined some steroids with his Champagne.
Meanwhile, the chef has been busy in the kitchen!
The Eyrie 2004 Pinot Gris was very fine and a good match
with the green bean and tomato salad.
This corn was incredible!
We opened a bottle of Elisabetta Foradori's 2001 "Granato," a
delicious bottle of barrique-aged Teroldego from the Trentino region of Italy.
Even Alexia said this was a good wine!
Thalia brandishes a knife as she's ready to cut the cheese.
I brought out a "Mystery Red"...
I would never have imagined a 1972 Almaden "Gamay Beaujolais" would
still be drinkable...but it was!
A 1965 Charles Krug "Burgundy" was also still alive, if less
Finally we opened a 2002 Louis Latour Aloxe-Corton...
This was a good example of French Burgundy...nice cherry fruit.
Thalia made some meringue "cups" and these were
filled with fresh berries and Jonathan's homemade ice cream.
Then Alexia opened a couple of birthday gifts...
She was much relieved that nobody gave her another Jesus "action
It was getting late and about time to turn out the lights.......
Many thanks to the Tolmach's for hosting and to the Lubinski's for helping.
Happy Birthday Alexia!
