It's Jesper's Birthday...Again...
Amy poured the first bottle of Champagne...a Philipponnat Grand Blanc.
This was certainly a 'nice' wine, but we're nominating it for "hall of
Chef Sherie then started to shuck the oysters.
Jesper, who has not fear of sharp tools, then took over the shucking business.
Happily, there was no blood in the mignonette sauce.
Pierre was quick to dive into the oyster platter.
Aviva jumped in, too!
The second bottle of bubbly had more yeasty
notes and was deeper and more to our taste.
Dittmer's salami, etc.
This was followed by a nice serving of chicken livers wrapped with bacon...
Amy's not much of a fan of chicken livers, so Sherie had a
nice little soup...
Amy was slightly wary of this, as it was the only liquid this evening sans
The De Villaine Bouzeron was quite good, crisp and lightly minerally. The
Abel Clement Cotes du Rhone was super, a fresh, bright, aromatic and very
flavorful wine. Even better, it has a very small price tag ($6.99)!
Andrew of Montreal.
Sir Robin of Graysmark.
Sherie then seared some sea scallops.
De Moor Chablis accompanied the sea scallops.
Amy then started doing a few 'shadow animals,' which amused Aviva and Jesper,
but shocked the hell out of Andrew, apparently.
The Birthday Boy.
The main course was a nicely cooked piece of cod with a vegetable "marmalade"
accompanied by a Domaine Labet "Beaune" white wine. This was a
nice pairing, the Labet being smoky and toasty and quite dry.
We then opened a 2003 Domaine Belle Hermitage, a lovely Syrah, showing sweet oak
and dark fruits...but it could have been from the New World almost as
easily. It was a wonderful wine, though.
Sherie then offered a nice assortment of cheeses.
Clementine's Tante Natalie enjoyed the various fromages.
After doing my best impersonation of Frenchman Marcel Marceau, Natalie
remembered she speaks French!
Aviva, who had rubbed two sticks together, got the birthday candles lit and the
fire department on "red alert."
...either preparing to blow out some candles or have a dental exam.
"Do you have a pwesent for me?"
In addition to a Chilean bean pot, a jar of chocolate with hazelnuts...
It was late and so we finally got up made our way home after a
Many thanks to the Graysmarks!
