ELENA BONIFER VISITS FILOLI
July 21, 2008

Jonathan and Lucy graciously invited the Pendletons, myself and the Famous Elena Bonifer for a garden tour and dinner.

We began with a trip to the basement...

A Swagelock glass never looked so good!

Out in the vegetable garden we saw lots of corn...

We checked Elena for 'stripes' but she didn't seem to have any...

The berry cage was full of fruit waiting to be harvested...

The colors in the garden are like candy for the eyes...

Time always seems to fly at Filoli...

We meandered back to the house and everyone was hungry...

Lucy plated the sushi...

Jonathan whacked up some baguettes to go with the cheeses and roasted eggplant.

The rose from Provence of the Chateau Barbanau estate was quite popular with the sushi.

Lucy mashed up the roasted eggplant and garlic and enhanced it with some balsamic vinegar...

Wie hei▀t diese auf deutsch?
Eierpflanze!
Melanzane in Italian.
Aubergine in French.
Eggplant...

Jonathan, meanwhile, had been running between the oven outside and the kitchen to check on the chicken and potatoes as they roasted...

Elena presented Lucy with a nice artisan soap as a hostess gift...

Jonathan prepped the vittles...

Elena snagged some of the stuffed mushrooms...

Glenn was a happy 'camper'...

We opened a number of interesting bottles as 'research'...

This Casanova di Neri Brunello was actually quite good...it's a 2003 vintage and it had nice fruit and was only a little bit jammy from the extremely hot summer growing conditions.
A second label of Chateau La Lagune was very fine.  It's a 2004 but we felt it too pricey at $50.  A 1997 second label of L'Angelus in Saint Emilion was very good and reasonably priced at $36.

The table was rather quiet as everyone dug in...

It seems Glenn Pendleton is the Salad King...

...While his brother Craig is praying for dessert!

Happily, his prayers were answered...

...with a chocolate tart and ice cream!

And we had a nice, fizzy Brachetto to go with dessert.

Jonathan brought out some home-grown berries, too...

And so we concluded another fantastic meal at Tolmach Manor in Woodside...

ELENA'S FINAL CALIFORNIA EVENING IN 2008

DINNER AT THE FISH MARKET

We began with a Seafood Fritto Misto....

And we also had Ahi Poke with wonton "skins"...

Elena (also known as "Big Time Bonifer") shows off her shark's teeth...

Scottish Salmon...

The Von Buhl dry Riesling was perfect with the seafood...

And, the next day, Elena boarded an airplane and returned home...

Auf wiedersehen!
