PAUL & HENRY'S
HOSTED BY MARJORIE MARTIN
February 16th, 2003
The evening began with Marjorie's famous Chicken Liver Pat and some Champagne.
Musician and Chef Spencer Cliff assisted Marjorie in producing this lovely
The Champagnes were both from LAURENT PERRIER:
Alexia is a big fan of this pat!
The first course featured Sea Scallops in a Tomato and Herb Sauce.
We paired this with
CHATEAU SMITH HAUT-LAFITTE
(I thought this bottle tasted significantly more mature than the previous one
several months ago.)
(Mildly toasty white Burgundy...quite good!)
While everyone else was chowing down on the starter, Paul and Bob were engaged
in some sort of conversation using hand signals.
Marjorie enjoyed the Auxey-Duresses.
Sandy Obester, who's glad she's not driving.
Marjorie's Famous Korean-Styled Short ribs were the main course, accompanied by
some oven-roasted root vegetables.
(Marvelously spicy with an almost grapefruit-like character and white pepper.)
DOMAINE DU COLOMBIER
(Deep and dark, with ripe plummy fruit, a hint of exotic, sweet spices...really
a great match for this plate!)
Miranda was not so interested in the wines, but was delighted with some of the
bones of the short ribs.
Alexia brought the Plateau de Fromages and has difficulty in choosing which ones
We opened two Burgundies:
1993 Clos de Vougeot
(Burgundian, mildly earthy, nice fruit and smooth...certainly approaching its
1993 Clos de la Roche
Cuve Vieilles Vignes
(More chunky, dark, intense red, but difficult to identify it as Pinot Noir.)
A birthday cake from The Cakery in Burlingame was outstanding.
We drank a bottle of
DOMAINE DU MAS BLANC
(Berry and spice notes with ripe, mildly jammy notes.)
Henry is a big fan of Chocolate and Cake.
Henry received some "DANGER: MEN COOKING" Oven mitts.
Both Paul & Henry received a small bottle of some kind of German Shampoo
thanks to our friends Norbert and Gaby.
I can only say I tried some of this and it reminded me of the skankiest,
smelliest cheese! Paul and Henry are each now the proud owner of a bottle
of one of these curiously-scented hair care products.
Paul thanks Marjorie for the nice evening. Good thing the flash on the
camera was not engaged!
When we start taking photos such as this, you know it's time to go home!
A big "Thanks" to Spencer Cliff for his efforts in making this party a
