Vino Fino Tasters   MOURVEDRE August 2013

Notes By
GERALD WEISL,
wine merchant

Earlier this year we tasted some Grenache-based blends, so for this tasting we decided to evaluate a more muscle-bound Rhone red grape, Mourvedre.

The Mourvedre variety is said to have originated in Spain where it was brought to southern France hundreds of years ago.  In the late 1800s when the Phylloxera root louse was devastating vineyards around Europe, Mourvedre died out in most of France.  Only in exceptionally sandy soils where it could be planted on its own roots (places such as Bandol in Provence, for example), did it continue to be cultivated.

In the late 1940s and 1950s the owner of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape estate of Beaucastel began working to find a suitable grafting partner to allow Mourvedre to be planted more easily.  As a result, Beaucastel's Chateauneuf has a fairly high percentage of Mourvedre in it to this day and the grape has been taken to the New World.

In California it's long been cultivated...before the 1990s it was more commonly known as Mataro, named after a town in Spain.  The Spanish also know the Mourvedre as "Monastrell."

In France's Bandol appellation, red wines much be at least 75% Mourvedre.  In the Southern Rhone, the grape appears as part of various Cotes-du-Rhone red wines.

The grape ripens late and has thick skins which protect it from rot in the event of early harvest season rains.  But the thick skins can also provide a wine with serious levels of astringency, so it can give backbone to Grenache-based blends.

The character of Mourvedre-based wines tends towards the earthy, gamey, leathery end of the aroma and flavor spectrum.  It is not uncommon for the wine to display notes reminiscent of dried meat.

We assembled a set of 5 California Mourvedres and 3 French.  All the wines were of good quality, making for a difficult tasting experience.  Two wines outpaced the group, but these were not run-away winners.

Here's what we found:

8th Place:  DOMAINE TEMPIER 2009 BANDOL
Clear in appearance and medium ruby in color, this locally famous French wine had a fairly good fragrance with a dusty quality and mild red fruit tones.  It seemed to have a hint of a peppery quality, too.  Medium+ bodied, this is a good example of the typically tannic Mourvedre in a youthful state.  It's lean and mean at this stage, as it should be.  I gave it a one star rating presently (3 stars maximum, with no stars being a standard or ordinary wine), though with time, it should warrant a higher rating.

7th Place:  NEYERS 2011 Sonoma Valley "Rossi Ranch" MOURVEDRE
With a light ruby color, this wine had, to me anyway, a beautiful fragrance of Mourvedre.  I found earthy notes and a dusty element on the nose, along with a touch of spice and a mildly leathery quality.  The wine is dry and nicely acidic.  Despite the light color, it is fairly full-bodied on the palate and has the tannic 'thrust' of this powerful grape variety.  I suspect it will benefit from another 3  to 5 years of cellaring and can probably last another decade, or so.  One and a half stars...Nice!

6th Place:  DOMAINE ASTRUC 2011 Pays D'oc MOURVEDRE
Clear in appearance and medium+ ruby in color, this wine shows some lightly earthy notes on the nose with a touch of Mourvedre 'funk.'  There's a dark berry quality underneath that, though.  The wine is dry and medium-bodied.  It's much softer and simple on the palate than the rest of the wines, so it's perfect acceptable.  Unveiled and seeing that it's a nine-buck bottle, it's everything it should be for that price.  Tasted blind, though, it takes a back seat to most of the other wines.  I did not find this worthy of a star, however.

5th Place:  SCAGGS 2010 Napa Valley "Mount Veeder Montage"
Light ruby in color and clear in appearance, this wine seemed to be identical to the Neyers 2011!  Earthy and dusty, with a touch of a spice note on the nose...very typical of Mourvedre...dry and nicely acidic...medium+ to full-bodied, despite the color not being inky black.  Tannic, tight and robust, with plenty of dark fruit on the palate and a lot of astringency...it can probably live for another 10 to 20 years.  I gave it a two star+ rating...Very impressive, but not a wine for those who like soft, mellow reds.

4th Place:  TABLAS CREEK 2010 Paso Robles MOURVEDRE
Clear in appearance and light ruby in color, this wine showed perhaps the greatest intensity of "fruit."  The aromas displayed red fruits, lots of berries and a hint of a violet-like fragrance.   It's dry and moderately acidic, with medium+ body.  On the palate we found this to be tart and tannic, but with plenty of fruit to balance the tannins.  It's certainly mouth-drying with its tannic ferocity presently, but they did a good job in capturing the character of Mourvedre.  Two stars.

3rd Place:   GROS' NORE 2009 BANDOL
Medium ruby in color and clear in appearance, I found a cocoa or candied note on the nose here.  There's a mildly woodsy tone, too.
The wine is dry and moderately tart, with medium+ body.  The Gros Nore wine was typically well-structured, but I thought it showed less fruit than it should to match the astringency.  It's tight and lean presently...but we've had previous vintages of Gros Nore and they've blossomed beautifully.  For now...no stars and a "wait and see" position...No stars presently...

2nd Place:  NEYERS 2010 Sonoma Valley "Rossi Ranch" MOURVEDRE
Clear in appearance and medium deep ruby in color, this wine shared some of the earthy elements of Neyers' 2011 Mourvedre, but there is a blackberry fruit note here which is more intense.  It's dry and moderately acidic, with seemingly less body than the 2011.  I found the wine to be a bit 'soft' in the center, yet astringent and coarse with plenty of tannin.  The contrast between the wine being a bit soft and at the same time, harsh, caused me to rank it towards the bottom, though others, clearly, liked it.  No stars.

1st Place:  JUICY REBOUND 2010 Contra Costa County "Evangelho Vineyard" MOURVEDRE
Clear in appearance and medium-deep ruby in color, this wine showed plenty of fruit on the nose.  Dark fruit takes center stage with a lightly earthy tone in the back and there's a mildly woodsy aspect here, too.  Very enchanting fragrances!  It's dry and mildly acidic with medium+ body.  What captivated me was the balance:  it's full bodied and intense yet it's not as 'fierce' as some of the wines in the tasting. Still, it seems to have enough structure to last another 5 to 15 years.  Quite deep and beautifully balanced...Showy!  Two stars +!

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.

WE HAVE NOT ORGANIZED A TASTING IN A WHILE...
BUT WE DO POST THE RESULTS OF A PRIVATE TASTING GROUP THAT'S BEEN MEETING FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS!

We are working on organizing some blind-tastings at the shop.
Send us a note to indicate your interest in participating.
These would be on Wednesday evenings and you'd need to bring 8 wine glasses.
