VINO FINO TASTERS MODESTLY-PRICED PINOT NOIRS from
CALIFORNIA OCTOBER 2021

With so many bottles carrying $50+ price tags, we thought we'd
dial it back a bit for the October 2021 tasting and survey a flight of
lower-priced Pinot Noirs.
That means we did not have a look at wines from brand new wine companies which
have proliferated over the past few decades, as these continue to spring up like
weeds after the rains. Instead we looked at a flight of wineries or
winemakers who have been around the block a time or two.
We tasted wines ranging from $20 to $33 (though the Chalone fetches $40 on the
winery website presently) and had six wines from Sonoma County, one from
Monterey and one from Santa Barbara.
The last place wine was well behind the pack, as was the 7th place bottle, both
from Pinot Noir specialists.
Second and Third place finishers have a bit of history with Pinot Noir, though
one has changed ownership a few times over the past decade, or so.
The First Place wine was made by an old-time winery with more notoriety for
several other varieties and yet their 2019 Pinot Noir had more than half the
First Place votes! It finished significantly ahead of the group and,
oh-by-the-way, it was the least costly bottle in the flight!
(We appreciate that, especially!)
This turned out to be a difficult flight to rank as there was but a narrow band
of quality here. In some tastings you'll find one or two weaklings and
maybe one or two contenders and then the middle of the pack.
Our Pinot Noir flight was a challenge as the wines were typically sound and well
made. None of the wines displayed a lot of wood, residual sugar or inky
dark color (uncharacteristic of Pinot Noir) like some popular, mass-market
brands.

8th Place: AU BON CLIMAT 2019 Santa Barbara PINOT
NOIR
Clear in appearance and light garnet in color, this started off nicely,
showing mild Pinot Noir fruit, a touch of oak and typical red cherry
notes. It's dry and nicely acidic, being medium-light in body. It
was very light on the palate and a bit thin, with less character than expected
based on the nose. As it developed there was a faintly stewed fruit
element...not cooked or raisiny, but there was a warm, ripe quality to
this. It reminded me, on the last sniff, of Pinot Noirs from the 1970s and
1980s. I gave it a 1/4 star rating...no stars being standard or ordinary
and three stars being exceptional.
7th Place: PELLEGRINI 2018 Russian River Valley PINOT NOIR
Light red in color and clear in appearance. The aromas were
attractive with some bright cherry notes and other typical red fruit
fragrances. It started out nicely and was dry with modest acidity.
The wine is medium-bodied, but while it offers hints of Pinot Noir, its not
especially profound as was a less exciting wine on the palate. It's
drinkable now, but ultimately is a shade shallow. I gave this a one-half
star rating.
6th Place: HAHN "SLH" 2019 Santa Lucia Highlands PINOT
NOIR
Medium garnet in color and clear in appearance, there was fairly typical
Pinot Noir fruit on the nose here. It has a mild touch of wood perfume,
too. This is dry and mildly acidic, with medium+ body. There's
perhaps a shade less Pinot fruit on the palate, though and it's merely a
slightly woody little red wine in terms of flavors. One half star
rating.
5th Place: ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS 2019
Alexander Valley PINOT NOIR
Clear in appearance with medium garnet color, the nose of this wine
seemed a tad undeveloped and rather youthful. There's a sour cherry fruit
character here. It may have a little bit of sweetness as it did not seem
as dry as the other 7 wines in the flight. It's medium-light in body and
the flavors are not particularly intense in terms of Pinot Noir fruit.
It's a drinkable, easy, simple red wine though. One half star.
4th Place: FORAGER 2019 Sonoma Coast PINOT NOIR
Medium garnet in color and clear in appearance, this wine displayed
sweet wood notes up front but only light Pinot character under that. The
wine is dry and nicely acidic with medium+ body. It struck me as a bit of
an old-fashioned California Pinot Noir with juicy red fruit flavor and maybe a
bit of length. It should last several more years. I gave this a one
star rating.
3rd Place: HOOK & LADDER 2018 Russian River Valley PINOT
NOIR Estate Grown
Medium garnet in color and clear in appearance, this was in my top
three for its aromatics. There's mildly cherryish Pinot Noir fruit that is
quite typical and I liked the use of oak...enough to sense the wood, but not too
much. The wine is dry and has good acidity, with medium+ body.
There's a bit of tannin which gives it a little grip on the palate, but not to
an extreme degree. Good Pinot fruit on the palate. One and a half
stars.
By the way, this is made by the DeLoach family, whose namesake winery in now
owned by the Boisset wine empire.
2nd Place: CHALONE 2019 Chalone Appellation PINOT
NOIR Estate Grown
Clear in appearance and with garnet color, this displayed a mildly
toasty oak fragrance as well as some dark cherry fruit aromas. It's dry
and has a good level of acidity, being medium-bodied. The flavors are a
shade less intense as there's pleasantly simple Pinot Noir fruit on the palate
and a light oak spice. I gave it one star.
1st Place: PEDRONCELLI 2019 Russian River Valley PINOT NOIR
Medium garnet in color and clear in appearance, this wine offers good
Pinot Noir fruit on the nose with some bright cherryish tones and there's a hint
of toasty oak, too. Dry and moderately acidic, this is medium+
bodied. It has a lightly tannic feel and yet there is a lush or plush
aspect to the flavors. It is a fairly complete wine, having as much
character on the palate as we found on the nose. There's a lightly tannic
element on the palate. It's not a show-stopper of a Pinot Noir, but
this was quite a satisfying wine given the texture on the palate being simply
deeper than the rest of the field.
I gave it one and a half stars +.
Now that we see it's well-priced, too, that makes it all the more satisfying.
