Now that California wine drinkers have discovered Pinot Noir, there's a
proliferation of producers providing the possibility of paying a premium price,
just as one can with California Cabernets.
We assembled a set of Pinot Noirs from as far north as Monterey and as far south
as Santa Barbara. The 2002 vintage is well-regarded by the winemakers,
perhaps because the fruit achieved high levels of sugar and with substantial
levels of alcohol, the wines are likely to get good scores from those who
attempt to rate wines on a 100-point scale.
The Wine Spectator is pushing the 2002 vintage of California Pinot Noirs.
Writer James Laube's September 21st article notes:
"The best 2002s are genuinely exciting wines. They have a wonderful purity of flavor along with exceptional dimensions of richness, concentration and finesse. They are helping to define regional styles as well as reinforcing a California Pinot profile that emphasizes ripeness of fruit and complexity of flavor."
The wines, as a group, displayed elevated levels of alcohol and high levels of
tannin. As seems to be increasingly common, some Pinot producers are
making wines from over-ripe fruit and totally missing the boat, in our view.
If you're a Pinot Noir drinker and looking for finesse, elegance and balance,
this set of wines is not going to be pleasing. If your palate prefers
Cabernet, gobs-of-fruit Zinfandels or warm climate Syrahs, these may be what
you're looking for. I'm not surprised Mr. Laube, a confirmed Cabernet fan,
would be enamored with these huge, dark wines. In fact, a number of Vino
Fino tasters commented on the rather dark color of the wines in this flight.
It will be sad if many vintners choose to make "extreme" wines out of
Pinot Noir. There are certainly other red wine varieties better suited to
high alcohol.

8th Place: LONGORIA 2002 Santa Rita Hills
"Sanford & Benedict Vineyard" PINOT NOIR
This wine shows some toasty elements from the oak and also a berry
character of the fruit. There's a hint of roasted meat on the nose,
too. It's a very big wine, with some heat on the palate and plenty of
tannin. It's really a mouthful...lots of "attack" here. But it
doesn't seem balanced in terms of alcohol, tannin, acidity and fruit. I
didn't give it a star on my three star scale, no stars being a standard or
ordinary wine.
7th Place: TAZ 2002 Santa Barbara PINOT NOIR
The nose of this wine displayed fairly intensely vanillin aromatics and
ripe, mildly jammy fruit. It's big, robust and deep and certainly hot on
the palate. The tannins are a bit aggressive. This is certainly not
a Burgundian-styled wine, but a good Pinot for those who are weaning themselves
away from young California Cabernets. Beringer Blass funds this Santa
Barbara project, Taz being the nickname of a viticultural specialist in their
employ.
6th Place: MINER 2002 Santa Lucia Highlands "Garys'
Vineyard" PINOT NOIR
The previous vintage of this wine was exceptional, but this particular
bottle I felt was flawed. It wasn't clearly "corked," but there
were elements of corkiness or a faintly musty character. The color was a
few shades lighter than the other wines, being a deep ros color. Some
elements of the nose were attractive, marred by that vaguely musty
character. Will have to re-taste this. Judgment reserved for me,
though some tasters were very happy with this wine in its present condition.
5th Place: SIDURI 2002 Santa Lucia Highlands "Garys'
Vineyard" PINOT NOIR
This was one of the few wines in this set which actually reminded me of
Pinot Noir. It has bright, berryish fruit notes with some woodsy
notes. There is a hint of jamminess on the nose. It's a big wine, as
are most of these, but it speaks of Pinot Noir on the palate. Nice
cherry fruit and some sweet oak made this a high-ranking wine on my score
sheet. One star+.
4th Place: MENDELSON 2002 Santa Lucia Highlands PINOT
NOIR
I've read good reviews for this fellow's wines and his web site points
to some experience in the cellars of a Burgundian wine company. This was a
really ripe to over-ripe wine in terms of fruit. The wines struck me as a
late-picked, over-ripe Zinfandel. There's a note of green olive on the
palate, so, somewhat like Zin, you have over-ripe and immature fruit
notes. John McGlothlin voiced concerns about it being volatile on the
nose. In any case, this has little to do with Burgundian-styled Pinot
Noir.
3rd Place: CHALONE 2002 Chalone Appellation PINOT NOIR
There's a most interesting spice component to the nose of this
wine. I found the aromatics to be very promising and intriguing. But
on the palate all I found was a dull sort of cocoa flavor. It's got a
flavor somewhat reminiscent of chocolate covered strawberries. Having
found the nose so promising, this was disappointing on the palate.
2nd Place: BELLE GLOS 2002 Santa Maria Valley "Clark &
Telephone Vineyard" PINOT NOIR
This brand is owned by Napa Valley's Caymus. Chuck Wagner named
their Pinot project after his mom. This wine was distinctively Pinot Noir,
but it's also quite idiosyncratic. While most of the wines display ripe
berry fruit, this had a citrusy tone to it. I was reminded of candied
orange peel on the nose and palate. The flavors also have a lightly floral
tone to them.
1st Place: ROAR 2002 Santa Lucia Highlands "Pisoni
Vineyard" PINOT NOIR
I wouldn't have imagined I'd be ranking this as my top wine since the
nose started off with a rather grassy, almost compost pile quality. This
seemed to dissipate over the course of the tasting, but it does start in an odd
fashion. It is, like most of these wines, a Cabernet-styled Pinot
Noir. The fruit is ripe, reminiscent of dark berries and plums and has
some elements of Pinot Noir. But the theme is still of ripe fruit and
Cabernet tannins. One star.
