VINO FINO TASTINGS
This is a tasting group which has been meeting monthly since the mid-1970s.
Our first tasting was of Cabernets and included such fabulous wines as Ridge 1971 Eisele
Vineyard, Yverdon's 1970 "Cask 88," Pedroncelli 1970 and Beaulieu Vineyards 1970
(or was it 1968?) Private Reserve.
Over the years the group has changed in membership, though many of the original members
remain. These would include John McGlothlin, Gary Peer, Allan Anderson, Tim Zainer,
Mark Naismith, Jack Sweitzer and myself.
The tastings are conducted "blind," no one knowing which wine is which. A
roster of the entrants is available prior to the tasting.
These tastings are held in private homes and there are, from time to time, distractions
(some table talk/gossip, a phone ringing or a sports event on a TV set in the distance).
The point is, the tastings are not in a clinical laboratory setting.
I'll post the results of tastings which are of special interest.
A SAD NOTE:
JOHN VIGNAU
One of our old-timers was diagnosed in late September 2000 with cancer. He
was subjected to a round of chemotherapy and the doctors said he had limited time to live.
John Vignau slipped into a coma the first day of October and died October 3rd.
John was a Vino Fino regular for many more than 20 years and was always a
quick-witted, friendly fellow whose tasting rankings virtually never agreed (or were even
close) to the group results. This is most ironic, given his French family name refers
to vines or vineyards!
Nevertheless, he was a jovial fellow and his place at our table will never be
filled.
The following note was sent to the Vino Fino members by Jack Sweitzer:
"For those of us who have known John for a long time, it would be nice if
we could attend the funeral. I plan to go. No one likes funerals. There:
a cold slap of reality. But if you think about John's illness, maybe each of us will
complain a little less about our aches and pains, have one less altercation with people we
interact with, and be way more appreciative everyday when we wake up
with our health. Sorry for the soapbox, it was more for me than anyone else."
At the memorial service for John, held October 7th, John's best buddy John
McGlothlin gave a terrific speech which brought a chuckle and tears to the various
Vino-Fino tasters who were amongst the crowd. Though a somber occasion, we dedicated
our October 2000 tasting to John's honor. |
