SPANISH TEMPRANILLO TASTING
A Blind-Tasting Comparison

We routinely cast a blind eye towards the vintage chart, finding good wines
in so-called "off" vintages and poor wines in supposedly great years.
Those who write critical reviews of wines seem to only be pleased by years which
produce wines requiring years of cellaring before the wines are viewed as
"drinkable." The poor producers, as a result, can only sell
their wines to "collectors" a few times during a decade!
Now that we've tasted a set of Spanish Tempranillo-based reds, do I learn the
1999 and 2000 vintages are given lukewarm praise in Rioja, while in the
neighboring Ribera del Duero region, these are more highly-regarded.
However, we also had wines from La Mancha and one which is "merely" a
Vino de Mesa from Zamora.
For someone who enjoys good Spanish wines, this was a really nice line-up.
Even my last place wine was very drinkable and good quality.
One wine was slightly ahead of the group as our first place winner. One
wine was well behind the group and three wines were tied for 2nd place!

8th Place: VALENCISO 2000 Rioja Reserva
"It's initially charming but I found it thin and flat and it seemed
to fall apart in the glass." said one critic. Another asked
"Where's the beef?" Someone said "I liked the nose with
some dark charcoal notes in the back but it's bitter and unbalanced. A
simple red table wine at best." One critic asked if this wine has
some residual sugar, finding it "grapey," too. Another panel
member described it as reminiscent of "chocolate cherries with redwood and
cedar notes and it's correct on the finish but not lingering."
I found some wood notes on the nose and an underlying forest-floor sort of
fragrance. The flavors show these woodsy notes and are correct for a
Rioja. I gave it one star on my three star scale, no stars being an
ordinary or standard quality wine.
7th Place: MUGA 2000 Rioja Reserva
One critic faulted this wine for being "simple, flat and lacking
fruit." Another detected "salty flavors and it's
tannic." Someone else encountered notes of rubber, "almost a
burnt rubber character." Echoing that sentiment, one taster found
"burnt sugar notes." Another panel member found "soft
cranberry notes and it opened nicely with dark currants. I found it simple
but not as bitter as many of the other wines."
Though I ranked it last, I still found some positives here. It displays a
bit of spice and a lightly pepper note on the nose. I faulted it for being
a bit flat, though mildly tannic. There's a jammy quality here, so
drinking it in the short term is probably advisable. One-half star.
6th Place: DEHESA LA GRANJA 1999 Castilla Lon
One person found this wine to change the most over the course of the
tasting. "I found notes of dirty socks to start, but then this dissipated.
It's got a light cinnamon tone and is tart and tannic. It ought to do well
with some additional bottle aging." Another taster found it
"Well-structured, but not a lot of fruit. There are some cigar box
notes and dark cherries here, however." One person described it as
"the biggest mouthful of the tasting." Someone else felt there
was something amiss here: "I got a chemical or acetone quality to start and
a chemical taste." One critic asked if it has some Cabernet in the
blend. Another described the fruit as showing "violets and dried
peaches," while someone else found "tangerines and
grapefruit." A note of chlorine was found by one taster, while
another opined that the "terroir was not obscured by oak."
I marked this down initially, as the nose was poor, reminding me of shellac or
paint thinner. Definitely a volatile character, but not sharp.
Amazingly these off notes are not perceived on the palate, as the wine shows
nice fruit and some woodsy notes. I ended up giving it a one star rating,
more for its flavor than the nose.
5th Place: CARMELO RODERO 1999 Ribera del Duero
One taster found this to have a "roasted" character, saying
there's a "charred element here, too." Someone else detected a
not of petroleum, while another taster found "caramel and
vanilla." One panel member found "sawdust from the oak and a
pineapple quality." Another taster felt this was "heavily oaked
with some barnyard notes and dark currant fruit. There's some nice oak and
it's got a soft finish with a note of charcoal. It's the best integrated
fruit/oak/tannin of the bunch."
I found this to be nicely cedary to start with some berry-like fruit and plenty
of good oak. Nicely balanced on the palate, it's a marvelously woodsy
Tempranillo. It starts off strongly, has a nice middle and good
finish. One-and-a-half stars.
4th Place: EL VNCULO 2000 La Mancha Crianza
"Wow...there's way too much American oak on this wine! remarked one
critic. Another found it "lacking fruit and it's light, thin and very
woody." Someone else liked its dark fruit notes and heavy oak.
But one panel member found it "thin and watery, not to mention
tannic." A fifth critic detected "dried cherry fruit and some
eucalyptus leaves. It's ample, dignified and has a good
finish." A final critic mentioned finding notes of
"coconut."
I encountered plenty of oak on the nose, making this a very typical red wine
from Spain. There's fragrances of freshly cut lumber and some licorice
aromas. It's woodsy on the palate, having plenty of oak and then
some! Two stars.
3rd Place: EL VNCULO 1999 La
Mancha Reserva
One person found this to have a "very complex nose, though I got a
bit of SO2 at the start. It's
immature on the palate, with plenty of nice fruit. Luscious as it
sat." Another taster said "It has good fruit to start and got
better." A third critic detected "American oak on the
nose. There's a moderate amount of fruit and soft tannins with dark
currants and a little bit of vanillin." A final critic pegged it as
"A flash-in-the-pan oak bomb."
I found some notes of saddle leather to start. But this gave way to oak
and peppermint notes. It's a deep, big, showy red wine needing some
grilled lamb to go with it. I gave this two stars, but noted it has more
cellaring potential than its younger, less-costly sibling above.
2nd Place: VALDERIZ 2000 Ribera del Duero
One critic said "This shows notes of coffee...definitely
coffee-like!" A second taster found notes of "pork
rinds." Another person found elements of a cooked roast of some
sort. One rocket scientist said "You either like it or you
don't." Someone else found notes which reminded them of a Chteauneuf-du-Pape.
A final taster said it's not very typical of Spanish wines.
I agree.
It's really an internationally-styled red showing lots of sweet cocoa and cedar
notes. There's a hint of a resiny character, too, but the sweet oak is
really marvelous. Cocoa and vanillin on the palate, the sweet wood and
mocha notes make for an interesting taste. Two stars.
1st Place: EMILIO MORO 2000 Ribera del Duero
"Malleolus"
"This is tarry." said one critic. Another described that
character as being reminiscent of "smoked bacon. It's 'old Spain,' a
wonderful character. Typically Spanish red." Someone else
pegged it as "dark fruits and cedar." Another panel member found
the nose to be "muted, with a hint of burnt rubber. It's a little bit
stewed and earthy with Turley-esque notes." A final critic said
"the first whiff was Burgundian," though the felt the mid-palate was
lacking.
I had this ranked first from the first pass through on the nose. I might
criticize it for being a shade less intense on the palate than I'd like, but
still, it's pretty darned good. I found the fruit to be reminiscent of
dark berries and plums, with plenty of nice oak. The wood comes through on
the palate, too. Big, deep...very fine. Two stars+.
