VINO FINO TASTERS   CALIFORNIA CABERNETS (From Established Wineries) DECEMBER 2020

Notes By
GERALD WEISL,
wine merchant

December's Vino Fino event has typically been a wine and food marathon, of sorts, as we meet at a local club in San Francisco and each member contributes a bottle of note from their cellar.

But in the Covid-19 era, this was not possible.

We met at the spacious home of a City Vino Fino member and each participant wore a mask and took other safety precautions as we have been doing for the past several months.

We began with a little celebratory toast to the Season, such as it is...

We had a theme tinged with a bit of nostalgia...each wine entered must be from a winery which had been operating during the first decade of Vino Fino tastings, meaning the wineries needed to be releasing wines in the 1970s.  We had a nice list of producers, but had to eliminate a number of them as a handful have become rather costly.
Back in the 1970s, most Cabernets sold for $4 to $8 or $10 a bottle.
If a winery had a "reserve" bottling, it might be 20% more costly than the regular bottling.
These dynamics are not the case in 2020 and many Napa Cabernets start around $50-$75 a bottle and Reserve bottlings often cost $100-$300 a bottle.

Our selection ranged in price from $16 on the low end up to $65 on the high end.

I found a couple of wines I liked and, happily, these were not extravagantly priced.  The wines were within a narrow band of quality.

Here's what we found:

8th Place:  PEDRONCELLI 2017 Sonoma County/Dry Creek Valley  "Block 007 Estate" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Medium ruby in color and clear in appearance, there's a red fruit note with a floral tone.  As it aired, I detected a light leathery note and wondered if this wine had a bit of Brettanomyces as part of its profile.  Apparently a number of tasters rejected the wine for this element, which many view as a flaw.  It had good acidity, though and was dry with medium+ body.  I liked the woodsy flavors and did not mind the hint of Brett.  The wine has a bit of tannin, so 5 to 10 years of cellaring is not a bad idea, providing you don't mind the leathery notes.  I gave this one and a half stars on my three star scale, no stars being an ordinary or standard quality wine.
Pedroncelli is a reliable, old-time producer in Sonoma's Geyserville area.  They had been well-regarded in the 1970s for having good quality wines at sensible prices and this is still the case today.  It's owned and operated by the same family.

7th Place: MOUNT VEEDER 2018 Napa Valley CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Dark ruby in color and clear in appearance, this wine had good dark fruit fragrances and a light cedary note from its oak aging.  The wood was in the background and this was quite promising on the nose.  Dry and with good acidity, it's a medium-bodied wine.  The flavors are pleasant and maybe a shade les intense than expected based on its aromas.  Red fruit notes and a touch of wood on the palate, with mild tannins.  I gave this a one star rating.
Mount Veeder was founded by Mike and Arlene Bernstein, but they are long gone from the wine scene.  These days the place is owned by Constellation Brands (Clos du Bois, Mondavi, Simi, Mark West and many more).

6th Place:  TREFETHEN 2017 Napa/Oak Knoll District CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Medium deep ruby in color and clear in appearance, I was enchanted by the nose of this Cabernet...lots of intense varietal fruit with a mildly woodsy frame.  It's dry and nicely acidic and medium+ to full-bodied without being a fruit-bomb.  There's ample tannin for aging and nice length here. I gave it one and a half stars.
The Trefethen family released its first wines in the early 1970s and these days the Trefethen "kids" are working in the family business.  They are in a slightly cooler area of Napa and the wines tend to be more elegant as a result of the climate and winemaking philosophy, so theirs are not blockbuster wines.

5th Place:  CLOS DU VAL 2016 Napa Valley "Estate" CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Clear in appearance and medium ruby in color, this wine displayed some dark berry fruit and a slightly dusty note on the nose.  It's dry and mildly acidic, with medium+ body.  I described this as being, perhaps, a bit muscle-bound.  There's a modest level of tannin and the fruit does not seem, at this moment, to be hugely expressive.  For now I give this a half star rating, but suspect it will blossom to some extent and become a more complex wine.
This winery launched with the 1972 vintage and the wines were made by a French fellow, Bernard Portet, whose father had been the cellar man at Château Lafite-Rothschild in Bordeaux.  John Goelet funded the place and I believe he still owns the winery.

4th Place:  BUEHLER VINEYARDS 2017 Napa Valley CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Medium ruby in color and clear in appearance, this wine offered elegant, dark Cabernet fruit notes with a touch of a woodsy, cedary bouquet.  It's dry and mildly acidic with medium+ body.  The woodsy notes show nicely on the palate with some toasty oak and dark fruit.  There's a bit of tannin and it's likely possible to hold this for 3-10+ years.
Buehler started in the 1970s with Heidi Peterson as the winemaker.  John Buehler grew up near our shop in Hillsborough.  Ms. Peterson is now a famous consulting winemaker and makes ":old school," classic wines, especially those based on Cabernet Sauvignon.

3rd Place:  STAG'S LEAP WINE CELLARS 2017 Napa Valley CABERNET SAUVIGNON "Artemis"
Medium+ ruby in color and clear in appearance, this wine has pleasant dark fruit aromas and red berry notes on the nose...it's dry and moderately acidic, with medium body.  The wine seemed a bit closed on the palate, not showing much in the way of depth, but it's certainly a pleasant bottle.
The flavors are not particular deep, but it's a simple, easy-to-drink Cabernet.  I gave it a half star rating, but perhaps a bit of time will lengthen this?
Of course, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is an historic California winery, founded by Warren Winiarski and family.  They won the red wine flight of the so-called Paris Tasting in 1976 where California wines top the top rankings against French wines.

2nd Place:  SOBON ESTATE 2018 California CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Medium- ruby in color and clear in appearance, this wine showed red fruit aromas and a touch of wood with a mild, floral undertone.  It's dry and moderately acidic.  Medium bodied.  Red fruit on the palate with raspberry-like notes and that floral tone.  The tannin is mild, so it's drinkable over the short haul.  One star.
Leon Sobon moved from his gig at the Lockheed Research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area and established a little winery in the Sierra Foothills back in 1977.  They've long been known for having good quality wines and reasonable prices, which has been demonstrated here once again.

1st Place:  LOUIS M. MARTINI 2017 Napa Valley CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Clear in appearance and medium+ ruby in color, this had typical Cabernet aromas and red fruit notes with oak well in the background.  It's dry and has good acidity, with medium body.  I detected a hint of a licorice-like character on the palate and a hint of wood.  It's a good bottle of wine and I gave it one and a half stars.  This should easily go five to ten+ years.
Louis Martini was a family-owned Napa winery which typically had well-priced wines which we reliably good.  The Martini family sold the winery to Gallo, so it's still, technically, a family-owned winery.

After the tasting we arranged for a handful of Delfina Pizzas to be delivered...

This was a most pleasant surprise to the Vino Fino boys...

And then Dick offered everyone a slice of his wife's home-baked holiday cake.

We made the most of it given the Covid-19 Circumstances and hope 2021 will bring a return to a more normal December holiday event.

Please note: The wines tasted are not always wines we have (or have had) in the shop.
Many bottles are merely for our enological exploration.
Price quoted are current at the time of the tasting, but may be different when you're reading this.

WE HAVE NOT ORGANIZED A TASTING IN A WHILE...
BUT WE DO POST THE RESULTS OF A PRIVATE TASTING GROUP THAT'S BEEN MEETING FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS!

We are working on organizing some blind-tastings at the shop.
Send us a note to indicate your interest in participating.
These would be on Wednesday evenings and you'd need to bring 8 wine glasses.
